Sorry for the second post, but I figured it would help me get an answer quicker. I'm usingl lighter fluid to get it off,but it's not really helping that much. Is it supposed to soak through the whole control panel? Do I soak the whole thing in it? I need help on this, please.

Thanks,
Spike

Have you tried heat gun or maybe even a hair dryer to heat it up before peeling?

In my desperation to get this off before the new CPO comes tomorrow, I looked stuff up on deja. I saw that same suggestion. I'll try it. It's a SF CE original overlay (damn near 14 years old), so getting it off's a real bitch. Thank god I found a NOS ST overlay.... I have less than 24 hours before it gets here, so I want it off by then.

I'll give it a try. Thanks.

Well, here's what I am doing. NOTHING is working, so since it's such a monumental task getting it off, I then figure it won't come off by accident. So, I'm sanding over what tiny spots I DID get off, and will put the overlay over it. I say to hell with it. If I'm TRYING with all my might to get it off and it won't come off, what risk do I really run leaving it on underneath?

Damn, that not working either eh... wonder what the original owner used to glue it down? :spock: It won't really hurt anything to put your new overlay over the original, but it will probably weaken the bond with between the new one and the cp. As well as show any blemishes like holes in the old overlay. If you do put the new over the old makes sure to clean and sand really well and try to sand out and ridges between cp and the old cpo where you got some parts of the old cpo off. Might want to try asking on the BYOC forum before giving up though: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/ Alot of people there know quite a bit about arcade restoration/maintenance. Good luck. :)

Your post has given me hope of one last effort. I'm taking the CP to my granfathers and using that spinning metal brush wheel on it. Maybe that will do the job?

Here's to hoping!

Cool, hope that works out for you... I would be really surprised if that didn't take it off! :D

Well guess what? Did NOT work! You heard me right, didn't come off with that. But I'm taking it off one bit at a time, PAINSTAKINGLY, with a razor blade. Man, this cab restoration stuff's for the birds. :loco:

I did my control panel sometime ago, I too had trouble and ended up using a heat gun with a very sharp paint scrapper, to get rid of the excess glue I used acetone. The trick is to heat up a small scetion at a time and use the scrapper to lift the overlay from the metal. More heat the better.

Fuckin' finally! I slice my thumb up really bad, but after an hour I went back to work and now it's done. Question: do I need to put primer on, or can I now put on the overlay by itself? Thanks, all!

As a matter of fact, I'm done. The project was long and hard, and I hurt myself a bit doing it, but she looks great now. Nothing better than fixing up a cab. I'll try to get pics as soon as I can! New marquee, new buttons, new cap kit, new CPO. I spent about 130 to whip her into better shape, but it's worth it now.

EDIT: I have the "before" pic up... When my friend comes over with her digital camera, I'll have the after. Along with a few pics of my other machines.

Doesn't look bad in the before! :) Can't wait to see it finished, must be sweet.

I didn't see an answer to your question about priming under the cpo, in case anyone is still wondering the answer is no as it adds the chance that the paint will become brittle or peel thus removing the cpo from the cp.
