I have seen this "mistake" in several different Virtua Fighter cabs in different places. At first, I thought it was some stupid error because of the artwork not being original or something... but seems like this issue is present in all Virtua Fighter cab artwork.

VF.jpg

Here's the thing - the cab has the character faces just over the controller panel.

We see (from left to right)

Pai, Jeffrey, Sarah, Kage, Lau, AKIRA, Jacky and Wolf.

Now, does anyone happen to know WHY Akira is some sort of arabic man in that artwork?

How can SUCH mistake be present in thousands of Virtua Fighter cabs worldwide!?

That was actually a different character. They took him out because they thought he might offend Muslims / Arabs.

He's in Fighter's Megamix as one of the many unlockable characters.

Can't remember his name- you can probably look it up on GameFAQ's though.

You mean to tell me that the great Mushiki doesn't know the answer to that?

Do *you* know how expensive it is to clean a sucide bomber's intestines off of a Medium Res monitor?

Hah, really? I can't believe Sega made such mistake when printing these.

Yeah, come to think of it- it is pretty weird.

The cab that you posted is weird too- the right hand side button lay out is different from the left side.

Anyhow, the characters name is Siba.

Here's what GameFAQ's has to say about him:

Siba is a botched character originally designed for VF1. For proof, look at
some of the REALLY old VF1 machines; you'll see a picture of Siba alongside
the other fighters near the top of the machine--however, the name below him
says Akira!

It wouldn't be the first time a mistake was made on coin-op cabinet art.
The US release of Street Fighter II: Champion Edition had Balrog's name misspelled...

The artwork was already printed.

I've*only* ever seen VF cabs with that "Akira" on it. I've seen a ton through the auctions and warehouses, too.

Also, the button layout is common too.

Another interesting fact...on the "how to play" signage for the original US Donkey Kong cabinet, the main character wasn't actually referred to as Mario.

What other name did Nintendo have for Mario back in those early days?

Good luck!

As mainstream as this site has become, it's good to see that some people out there still have taste!

Then you have the games actually called Jumpman, Jumpman Jr. And of course, the various well-preserved Jumpman collections you can find on the internet. There's a total Jumpman package complete with board editors, as well. Wonderful stuff. Donkey Kong didn't just come out as a cool game, but it also inspired some great take offs.

Not to bump such an old thread, but if you play SSF2, SSF2T or HSF2, do a versus mode balrog vs balrog and have one of them win. The announcer actually says, "Ba*rl*og Wins!"

And as a second side note, I will be building a Jumpman Jr cabinet. If I need to reprogram the atari cart myself, I'll do it. That and spider fighter. :D

Edit- I actually found this thread somehow looking for Virtua Fighter artwork. I have a VF1 that needs the side panel artwork re-done.
