Hey guys, I'm interested in a 20 DVD set that was only made in PAL Format.

The Seller states that I can play it back on my PC DVD Player with a program like "WinDVD" or similar.

Now I checked up on WinDVD, and it costs a lot of money to get the full version.

Anyone know of a FREE way to play Pal DVDs on my PC?

If it's region 0, then ANY DVD software player will play it. Hell, if your DVD player would convert it to NTSC, you could even play them on your standalone player.

The Core Media Player is a free player, but DVD playback will cost you $10 to register. The fee covers the licensing costs associated with MPEG playback.

It's a decent player, not amazing, but it will do what you want it to do, and it's cheap as fuck.

As far as I know all dvd-rom players are region free.
And you would be incorrect.

The majority of pay to use programs (Win DVD, Power DVD and so on) go by the code that is on your DVD-ROM drive, which can only usually be changed 5 times before it locks the final region onto the drive (so if try 5 is Region 3, the drive is Region 3 until you find a way to reset it).

Most newer DVD-ROM drives use RPC2 as it's not as easy to get around, though the majority of DVD-ROMs have firmware hacks to put it back to RPC1, which basically makes the drive itself region less.

You should be fine using them on your PC DVD-ROM, DARK ANDY. Buy away.

Region 0 can be played on anything, it's the PAL format that fucks you.

Okay dude, got another question for you. :)

My mom only wants to watch these on the TV that we have.

It's a JVC TV/VCR/DVD Player combo, what do I need in order to be able to watch these on this TV?

Damn man, you just made the whole thing complicated.

In all honesty the TV may display the video, it just may not look right. The refresh rate on a PAL DVDs is lower than NTSC (50 vs 60 Hz) or the other way around. The TV will display SOMETHING (whether it's legible is another problem), it may just look weird. This can range from highly annoying to a mild nuisance. It may also not display at all, depending on the TV. PAL resolution is 625 lines compared to 480 on NTSC, so it's possible you may even be missing some of the picture.

Some DVD players will convert the signal automatically, especially region free DVD players. Go through your DVD player's setup options for video and see if it will do PAL -> NTSC conversion. Should be in the player menus itself (NOT the DVD menus).

Do you have a DVD burner? One option is to get the DVDs, rip them to your PC then convert the video using something like Nero Vision Express. It's part of the Nero package. You would then have to reburn them to DVD-Rs or DVD+Rs.

The trial lasts for 30 days, so you should be able to squeeze converting them into those 30 days. The cost of the entire package is like $80, so unless you know some warez else to find Nero, install Nero after you have the DVDs in your possession.

The only other option is to buy a video card capable of outputting to the TV from your PC. Hell, your video card may already have RCA or s-video out. It's a pain in the ass moving it around, but it's an option.

If you give me the model numbers of your TV/DVD/VCR combo thing, I'll check around on the net whether PAL works with your setup or not... assuming I can find anything.
