Since its one of my top psychological thrillers and I'm hyped to see the sequel...

I watched it again yesterday.

O.K. why didn't she die and the dude did?

Whats with making another copy of the video?

Who made the video?

Someone post a link explaining this to me, as I'm slow.

The American version of "Ring" didn't get the whole Ring concept right.

In the American movie, the "Ring" refers to the phone ring.

In the Japanese, original movie, "Ring" refers to a endless cycle.

When the American movie ends, you get the idea that it's all over, and that copying the video is all that was needed to save yourself, while the Japanese release doesn't end like that. The Japanese version talks about a cycle, the cycle of copying the video and having someone else watch it - that's the only way to save yourself. That means that person who watched the video to help you get saved will have to copy the video again, and have someone else watch it... that's the essence of the "ring". A never ending process.

Regarding who made the video. The video is supposed to be the materialization of Sadako's/Samara's anger/pain/suffering. Very meme-ish.

Thats the basic idea of it but in Ringu 2 didn't it go deeper into the story saying that even if you made acopy and showed it to someone else you would still be doomed? There's more to it but I don't want to ruin it for people waiting for the second one to come out.

Actually it refers to the ring of light that forms around the edges of the stone that was covering the well were Samara was killed.

But yeah, the idea of passing "the message" forward by copying the video and showing it to someone is pretty flimsy. There's really not enough concrete information in the film to accurately explain why Samara created a VHS tape with a rejected Tool video on it, why it needs to be passed forward, etc etc etc. Its a scary flim, but don't try to think about it too much.

I thought about that as well... but considering how down here in Argentina the movie was called "La Llamada" (The Call), I assumed it was related to the phone ring.

The manga more or less affirms what Mushiki said, except that I wouldn't say the American version's title refers to the phone ring. The ring is a metaphor for several things in both versions, and I believe all of those things have been mentioned here.

I believe "The Ring" is a direct translation of "Ringu", and I'm assuming "Ringu" doesn't have a double meaning as "phone ring" in Japanese...

ah but they screw things up on a general basis over here Mushiki, it's really quite embarassing.
The film is fantastic - I love the part where the horse goes crazy on the deck of the ship. Perfect cinema experience. I agree with Buro, its not worth thinking too much about it, because there won't be much there to find - its like the whole thing hinges on suspense, but that suspense is meaningless in itself - just a cinematic technique - if the story about Samara was revealed in detail, she would no longer be interesting. all these trivial little matters are there for sheer effect. very Edgar Allan Poe-like. good stuff.
I'm happy the transition from japanese to english worked as well as it did.

"the Ring" isn't so much a translation of "Ringu" -- it's that "Ringu" is the japanese pronunciation of the english word, "ring". So "Ringu" can refer to any one of the many different definitions of the word "ring".

the girl copied the movie and showed it to her son

just like Samara's father copied the movie and put it in the cabin over the well (and for doing that I guess he wouldn't be killed either).

Talking with Deuce about The Ring when it was released in the US, he wanted it to do only well enough to make a profit, but not give the greenlight for the sequels. I have a lot of faith in his taste, and if he says the sequels sucked, then I guess I won't bother seeing this one when it's released (unless I hear otherwise...)
