AMD Athlon 4 1.4ghz
ECS K7S5A mobo (circa 2001)
512 pny ddr ram
pny nvideo geforce 5700 VE 256 mb ddr

I'm trying to run FFXI at 20-30fps. I have foreground and background res at 1024 by 768. I have enviromental effects off. Would getting a new geforce or radeon help the framerate or is it more my cpu and mobo?

Thanks!

I would say that the 512 pny ddr ram needs to be upgraded to at least 1 GB, but I also do not know much about PC gameing.

the ram is the factor... but I would suggust a core upgrade myself... MB/CPU/Ram... why spend money on old parts now when the whole thing really needs scraped.

it depends what speed DDR that is, most of the performance in PC gaming is ram + videocard, if those are solid you can get away with average components in other areas, upping the CPU isn't gonna do much if the ram and videocard are still weak, motherboard will do the least of everything. 512 is pretty good, unless you're running windows XP, then I would suggest adding another 512.

1.4 is pretty slow nowadays, so the MB must be pretty old too, if you have the cash I would suggest going with a new MB and CPU with your old components, you could get like a 2.4Ghz cpu + MB for pretty cheap nowadays and that's upping you a whole Ghz in performance, and as you get more money upgrade the ram and videocard if you still need performance.

But IMO i wouldn't build a new gaming rig with anything less than 3Ghz nowadays.

Please describe the problem in detail, is it simply low framerates or does your game lag all the time?

Adding ram would give you faster access time.
Upgrading the GPU would give higher framerates.
Upgrading the Cpu would reduce LAG time.(Vast worlds and enviros found in this mmorpg requires a cpu with faster computing power) A faster cpu reduces game "stutters" and "hiccups".

Right now I can see the cpu as the main reason for the bottleneck.
