This is more for me than everyone, but I'd like to see it continue on after this post. Basically I'm trying to expand my musical horizon (or whatever you want to call it) but I'm not real sure of what bands to check out. I'm already heavily into electronic music, but lately I've been wanting to TRY and get into this garage band thing thats been going around. So here it goes, I like:

-Franz Ferdinand
-New Order
-Joy Division
-The Bravery (just got into these guys, great sound)

But a lot of other "similar" groups I've listened to are pretty boring (Modest Mouse, Bloc Party, The Killers).

listen to jonathan richman and the modern lovers. or just jonathan richman's solo stuff. it's fun, it's easy to get into, and it's not bad at all lyrically or musically.

If you like Joy Division, you might like Straylight Run...

They are made up of members of the now Defunct Taking Back Sunday, and some dudes sister.

it's not emo... more of a Pop type feel... Really cool, I saw them with Something Corporate really nice mellow songs... theres one lyric thats good in particular.

"Sing like theres no one around." over and over.. it's nice... the chick is cool too.... Tool Sheds and Hotubs is a nice track.

UK acts Razorlight & The Libertines have been popular of late, I liked them when the latest albums were out, though can understand why opinions are divided.

I think I'm the last person on earth that still likes the Strokes (and hasn't picked up their second album).

If you like Joy Division, you may enjoy Interpol. While both bands aren't mirror images of one another, the dark, somewhat depressing style of rock is a shared by the two. Interpol's debut release, "Turn On the Bright Lights," is a moody masterpiece that shows shades of post-punk and has slight mopey goth influences. Though it's not completely a downer, there are several catchy tracks that I think many Smiths fans may appreciate.

Interpol's latest album, "Antics," is another great release that takes "...Bright Lights" and cheers it up a bit. You could call it a "happier" successor to their debut.

I recommend Interpol to any fans of late 80's Cure and Joy Division.

Enjoy!

I saw Mastadon live back in January '04 and they were awsome. They only played for about 45 minutes but they were solid from beginning to end.

I really tried to like Joy Division but I just couldn't get into them.

I dislike everyone of these bands. I cannot help you. Except listen to something way cooler.

If you like the bravery and the killers, check out hot hot heat. I also recommend the rapture and death from above 1979,

Television > Every other band in this thread.

While I personally don't completely agree with the sentiment, you have to give Television their due. Virtually all of today's garage-esque rock bands with the punkish style and swagger owe a lot to "Marquee Moon," Television's classic album. Yes, it's from the late 70's, but don't worry about that. Give it a shot, you should be pleased.

In a similar sense, fans of Franz Ferdinand may appreciate Gang of Four, an 80's British band who fused punk-influenced guitar rock with a pinch of New Wave. A lot of what you hear in FF's music can be traced back to Go4. Though not as catchy as FF, Go4's guitar work is excellently done and doesn't sound too dated.

New Order?

If anyone finds an indie rock element in standard bearers Blue Monday & True Faith, wake me up when you've stopped dreaming.

As far as the bravery goes lmao, i cant even enter conversation, it's more of a tame pastiche with lo fat sugar than anything to be taken with an air of credibilty.
