OK, so i'm replacing the video ram on my 4 slot (the 5814s) and I thought I had unsoldered all the pins, well the chip came out but the solder terminal (hole in the board) for pin 24 is completely full of solder.

I have tried to suck it out with the desoldering iron, with and without desoldering braid. I have also held a staple in the hole with a pair of plier and heated it with a soldering iron. I even put the old ram chip back in the slot and heated the pin and nothing happened but the pin collapsed!!

What is wrong here??? Why can't I heat the solder out of this hole??

PLEASE HELP!!!!

The top, centre and bottom board contacts on each pin are common, so cut the pin short on the IC and just solder to the top side of the board.

Thanks, toddy, but I ended up getting the hole cleared out with my soldering iron and a safety pin. I only had to replace one of the video ram chips. My 4 slot works now!!! I'm excited this is my first multi-slot and first w/ stereo and memory card!! :drool_2:

I still have to crank the voltage up to use it with more than 1 game. If i have it at 5.16V i can only use 1 slot at a time, at 5.24V I can fill all four slots and it works. With two games in at 5.16V it just resets over and over.

Also for some reason if I have ROTD and KOF 99 in at the same time it resets over and over. No graphics just clicking and flashing on the screen.

OK.. so it's not working perfect yet. The test mode switch won't work? I can't get into test mode except with the universe bios B+C+D at bootup. Why would this happen? Works with my 1 slot...

hehe.... it's probably because MVS test switch is where jamma audio ground is. duh! I think i'll just do the uni-bios thing so i don't have to wire more switches around.

next time you may want use compressed air to blow out the hole after heated. use only as last resort and be very carfull to not let it get on to other parts of the board i.e. use common sense. also Snap On and other co. make micro drill bit sets for use by hand (my set goes down to .02225) cost less than $20.
