As much as I loved the first film when I saw it I now retroactively hate it having seen the ridiculously boring sequals it spawned. The reason the original was so damn good was because it hinted at the philosophy that was the back-story without preaching. The theme of reality verus perception was prevalent in the flick, but it wasn't overstated. There were multiple times where you were reminded or the thought behind the axiom was explained in a bit more detail, but it was never forced. There was also always something going on in the next few minutes to pull the audience back into the action of the movie after a scene of philosophical exploration.
The next two films mistook the audenience's intrigue in the original movie as a whole for interest in, specifically, the philosophy. This was a tragic blunder for the writers because they seemingly dusted off the soap box and went on a preaching spree for the next 5 hours giving the common movie goer, who has more vested interest in quality action and the characters' interpersonal relationships than extended pontification, nothing of merrit for his time and money spent. They also abandoned those who are interested in many of the postulations made as they rarely expounded on any of them since continuing the argument would likely pass the point where a disinterested party would just tune everything out. Thus giving neither audience anything substantial in the end.
My basic interest in philosophy can both aid and hinder my enjoyment of movies that touch on the subject matter I appreciate in print. On a positive note I can sit back and enjoy a good, solid argument when presented in a profound method even if it is a distinct rarity. I find it highly amusing when any media source conveys a thought provoking theory that I can contemplate for a period of time. Conversely, when a writer gets a bit too full of himself and tries to bombard us with multiple aspects of philosophy so as to enlighten the viewer who normally wouldn't bother with such thoughts, but condenses all the information into snipits so most don't just get up and leave out of boredom, I get irritable to say the least. I hope after these 2 awful movies Hollywood can agree to leave enlightenment to the scholars and refocus on the drama and comedy which is their bread and butter.
