Just curious how many on the boards are REALLY into, and I mean REALLY into the odd genre a good deal of us grew up with. I'm not talking about contemporary action-kung fu/karate/sword stuff with wire work, and apporpriate english subtitles... I'm talking about the yelled out with an echo, horribly english dubbed chop sockey {as it's often called} flicks from the 70's and early 80's, the kind that Kung Fu Theatre, Black Belt Theatre and Ninja Theatre showcased in the 80's... or the occassional late night cable syndicated run.

Most of this stuff has made the jump to DVD, and often times is confusing because one movie might have six different titles, and sometimes you'll buy the same movie twice or even three times if you're not careful. I've currently got back into this after years of ragging on it, stating it wasn't "faithfull translations", but now I can't get enough of it precisely for the horrible dubbing and awesome displays of martial mastery.

Some of my faves are:

Ching Wu & Shaolin Kung Fu
Long Step Mantis
Broken Oath
The Magnificent Kick
Jade Green Statuette
Shaolin Master Killer
Hand of Death

so anyone other than me a big fan of this stuff? I'm figuring most VS. FIGHTING game types would appreciate it, but you never know. Shit I've got dialogue from Dance of Death n my head. "I studied under Shang Lo, my Sifu of over 14 years, and you killed him you treacherous dog. Go ahead and use your gun on me, your skills or no match for my Kung Fu!"

Yeah, I like them. Don't know if I like them for the bad dubs or in spite of. Maybe depends case by case. I think my favorite would be Thundering Mantis, where at the end, the hero is screaming "The kid, the kid...they killed the kid...!" (holy shit, that's where I get that from), and he goes crazy and starts eating people. The Sleeping Fist movie that had the same 3 guys in it (hero, kid, old man) was good, too.

I used to buy old VHS from rental shops to get good Kung fu material. Some stuffs were cool and original like a movie called "Motocross ninja". I think I have thrown them away but it's always a pleasure to look for some good fights.
I think this genre is the beat em all equivalent in the game industry. Successful some times ago but definitively dead for the mainstream. It's quite sad since some sentences were priceless.
Just one quote. Blood sport with JC van damme. There is a contest where you must break only the last brick of a pile. one guy watch that with a disapproving look and says "the stone doesn't give the strike back" :buttrock:

I remember an other one:
It was a about a ninja/samurai (I remember clearly) who had only one arm and who had to fight against a monster. To kill him he had to use three swords at the same time!!!!! One of the most original fight I have ever seen
I also have great memories from Big Boss with Bruce Lee. I loved the fights with the big ice blocks. I loved also the moment were the guy discover a piece of fabrics in his bowl of ice.

Great memories, I want to watch some now.

Did anyone see Ninja III where some Japanese
Ninja was killing people on a golf course but the
Police shot the ninja to death but he manage to
bump into a woman before the he died & took
over her body at certain times. Man! it was a very
beautiful & very sexy white woman dancing in her
panties in her apartment while the radio was on.
When you see a lump in her panties we all know it's
her twat that guys wouldn't mind boning her.

The movie was back in the mid 80's though. :D :kekeke:

Hellz yeah, I'm a big Kung Fu flick fan.

The trashier, the better, and I definitely prefer the classic Hong Kong stuff (ancient China/Japan/etc.) over "current" movies. IMO, the 1970s and early 1980s were the golden years of this genre, the current ones are too technical, too polished and perfect (Tiger and Dragon, etc.), y'know, the whole "heroic bloodshed" stuff. Shaolin Soccer is very cool tho, it was one of the best new releases the genre saw since many years IMO.... that and Kung Pow... heh...

For me, a good Kung Fu flick has to be shot in Technicolor, and there has to be a lot of flying around, shouting and ridiculous choreographed fight scenes. . . :)

Some of my faves include of course the Bruce Lee movies (all of them), the 36th Chamber of Shaolin, the Drunken Master movies starring Jackie Chan (all of them), Master of the Flying Guillotine (Jimmy Wang Yu at its best), Golden/Iron Monkey Fist, Five Deadly Venoms, Seven Grandmasters, The Master's Daughter, Torture Garden (also known as One-armed Boxer or Yellow Snake), and many others, basically the whole Shaw Brothers/Chang Cheh lineup.

Together with horror, war movies, a bit of sci-fi and classic b/w Hollywood stuff, Kung Fu/martial arts is my fave genre.

I was a big fan of the TV show 'Kung Fu' with David Carradine.

The series has recently been rereleased on DVD, and amazingly enough the tiny little video store by my house has the set.

Last week I rewatched the first episode, and I'm looking forward to getting caught up on the rest.

I didn't like Kung Fu serie with Carradine because of the slow paced action (at least for the episodes I have seen). Good Kung fu movie has to be fast and full of actions. Kung fu was too much about talk IMHO.

I think that's precisely why I liked it- Caine (Carradine's character) was taught to use violence only as a last resort.

"Flee rather than wound, wound rather than maim, maim rather than kill"

I don't think I got the quote right, but you get the general idea.

I like Kung Fu movies with lots of action too, don't get me wrong- I just think that the show 'Kung Fu' was really exceptional.

I heard the reason for the limited fighting in the begining episodes was that david carradine did not know martial arts when he started the shows. This may or may not be true but the fighting did become a bigger parter in later episodes. My favorite one was with the irish miner and the fight between caine and the competitive wrestler. The miner accidentally killed the cat mascot of the minning camp and caine defended him when the rest of the company was beating him up. Caine and the miner were banned from the camp unless they could replace the cat. They come upon a farm and help the owner restore it. Bounty hunters of course come looking for caine and there is a fight between caine and the wrestler. Caine wins and the miner forgets all about the gold because its fake. It ends with caine walking off into the sunset(obviously). Anyway just my fav episode.

I like films with Kung Fu in it, not Kung Fu films.

It has to have a plausable and intelligent story, not based -around- Kung Fu, and have a real premise. Historical accuracy is a plus.

But other than that, I really dislike Kung Fu films.

My favs.

All of the Bruce Lee films minus Game of Death

Good Chan flicks-Fearless Hyena,Drunken Fist II,Police Story 1+2,Snake and Crane Arts of Shaolin,Dragon Fist,Half a loaf of Kung Fu(the opening credits where he is practicing on a midget wooden dummy kills me)

Tons more. Being a student of Martial arts I mainly watch them to check out the moves and some of the styles. I know most of the stories are garbage but thats not why you watch these movies.

A kung fu movie with a decent plot would actually be a bad kung fu movie. I did a lot of researching on the original game of death that bruce lee had invisioned and if it had been made it would easily have been one of the greatest martial arts flics of all time.

Boo! to tsuka. Carradine didnt know ANY kung fu.

I love gungfu movies. Old cheesy ones, new ones, in between...
Ninja Theatre, hosted by Sho Kosugi was great stuff.

Some old greats:
Thundering Mantis
Shaolin vs. Wu-tang
Death Duel of kung fu
5 Deadly Venoms (also called 5 Venoms of Death i think. or something.)
The one movie where the guy lost his leg, forged a steel replacement, and kicked some ass.
etc.

Some more "modern" gems:
Juggernaut (Kwan Tak Hing AND Yuen Biao)
Prodigal Son (Yuen Biao and Sammo Hung)
Ringo Lam's Burning Paradise
Tai Chi II (no relation to Jet Li's Tai Chi master, which was good as well)
Fist of Legend (Jet Li remake or "the chinese connection")
Drunken Master 1 & 2

Some of the best Kung Fu flicks came from Shaw Brothers. My favorites are Five Deadly Venoms, Shaolin Master Killer, The Return of Shaolin Master Killer. Some of the Bruce Lee flicks are okay, I hated when they had the phony Bruce lee impostors after he died. Bruce Le, Bruce Li, that sucked big time.
