I thought I should make one, since I've been revisiting the genre a lot, and
have found lots of gems lately.

I have some questions about some games...

Has anyone played The Combatribes?

wCombatribes,_The.png

Any good?

How about Undercover Cops?

I would like to hunt down kits of the Golden Axe series, but I'm afraid about
their suicide batteries? can these be replaced?

Warriors of Fate anyone?

I know most Capcom Beat'Em Ups are awesome (Punisher, Captain Commando,
AVsP, Dinosaurs & Cadillacs) but I have never played this game. Anyone can
tell me what to expect?

Gang Wars

Great pre neo beat'em up by ADK SNK.

Captain America & The Avengers, another great game, this one by Data East:

And then of course we have the obvious::

Double Dragon series
Street of Rage series
Final Fight series

etc..

Knights of the Valour is another series, that I have yet to play. How's the
the one for the Atomiswave? I was about to get a kit of KOV 2 Super Heroes
for the PGM, but seller backed out..

wow

great idea

Final Fight must be acknowledged as the alpha omega of Beat'em ups, just as Street Fighter II is recognized as the alpha omega of fighting games

all the games you've listed are warranted to give you alot of enjoyment. Undercover cops is particularly brilliant - Mutation Nation done right.

Some cool companies that made beat'em ups:

Capcom
Konami
Technos
Sega
Data East (the weakest link, but I enjoyed some of it)

It is ok, do you remember how the stages were set up in time attack in Final Fight CD? That is how the stages are in The Combatribes, instead of full length stages like in other games. The game reminds me of pit fighter, but what it should have been.

Here's one that took me by surprise:

1089956249.jpg

vBattle_Toads.jpg

1043019146.jpg

I discovered it about 3 years ago at a hole-in-the-wall family diner

good graphics, nice animations, good gameplay

I prefer it over it's console counterparts, because it was made for the arcade with arcade style gameplay

definately worth seeking out

I wonder if it's still there?

Yes, another great game. I would love to see a kit of this.
I only have the inferior nes port.

Great game, too bad after a few levels, it seems to be unbeatable.

ive played pretty much all of them.

my favourite is spikeout by a long shot and im very very keen to get my hands on it later this month (especially since its gonna have 4 person split screen apparently as well as being possibly being able to use every enemy in the game). the skill required (plus the 1.5 hours or so) to complete this game on one credit is insane....

others favs are cadillacs and dinosaurs, dnd1, punisher, sor2 and the one you asked about tenchi wo kurai 2.

I should have played more Beat 'em ups when I was growing up. I did sink alot of quarters into Final Fight, TMNT, and AvP. Good beat 'em ups :buttrock:

Rare always had a knack for making the series tough, not bad I say from a non-Japanese developer

there is a small attempt at reviving it. Spike Out should be decently successfull for XBOX and Capcom are making a (PS2?) beat 'em up with 3d graphics (though it could be something more akin to a fighting game).

other greats:
Violent Storm is very similar to Final Fight and almost as good. seriously one of the few non-capcom products to have mechanics as great as Final Fight. great look and feel too.
1053196435.jpg

Crime Fighters if only for the bosses as the urban settings - authentic early beat 'em up. upto 4 player coop.
Crude Busters: oh my god is/was this game awesome. pick up a car and trash some hoods. crazy bosses.
DJBoy was pure attitude and the bosses where fantastic. watch the boy dance in the intermission (want to play the pseudo sequel to this).
TNMNT was killer, you must have played this.
Simpsons Arcade is a very solid beat 'em up and very fun.
more to come

Those are some big ass sprites, reminds me of the Fu'un series, Savage Reign
& Kizuna.

they were probably my favorite type of games until Street Fighter II popped up, and even then I still played the shit out of them as I do now

another one of my favs:

wNinja_Gaiden.png

cNinja_Gaiden.jpg

the joystick had the button on top and the cab I used to play it on had a 2nd TV on top of the machine so everyone wouldn't crowd the players.

I bought and played the hell out of my Lynx version, and I regard it as a classic beat'em up. It was nice playing the Lynx version after finding out the NES version was a totally different game. I know Tecmo had another one I used to play but I can't seem to remember it right now.

Vendetta by Konami was great. In fact, Konami did so many great side scoller beat 'em ups. Simpsons, Vendetta, TMNT, Xmen. They were great. AvsP is great, as well... as are the Dungeons and Dragon games by Capcom, too.

But, SOR2 is the best ever. Yeah, Final Fight really kicked it into high gear, but it gets no better than SOR in the alien carnaval level.
