I'm thinking about buying a 19" LCD monitor, since I got my tax return.

Anyone got any recommendations? Which brands are the best? I want cheap but quality.

Samsung makes excellent LCD displays, as people have noted here. Highly recommended... and affordable to boot. I'm trying to get my hands on a 152X for my shmupping, but fifteen inchers are phasing out and the X series is less common here in the states (I think it's a Samsung Europe product).

Unless you're a really picky A/V person, 25ms response time won't distract you all that much. However, 16 and 12ms response times are of course more desirable. You can just throw that much more at the display and have it handle it well.

Thanks for the responses.

Another question. I was thinking I might use whatever monitor I'd get with the modded xbox as well as my PC, do most of them swivel to vertical? Do romz support tate mode or whatever you shmup nerds call it?

MAME allows you to display vertically.
That would indeed be a cool feature for a new-school LCD monitor.
Hmmmm...

Well reading some reviews yesterday, I know some of them easily swivel to vertical. Just don't know if that's a new thing or not. Or if it's only on higher priced models.

The swivel thing seems to be fairly common, and not necessarily limited to one particular manufacturer or price point. I think pretty much all Samsung monitors will swivel to vertical orientation.

One MAJOR caveat though, the monitor I bought and linked swivels clock-wise, making the right side of the monitor horizontally the bottom vertically. The issue here is that I got all psyched to hook up my DC with the VGA input on the monitor and play some Ikaruga in TATE mode. Unfortunately, Ikaruga displays its TATE mode in the OPPOSITE direction of the way my monitor rotates, so basically it displayed perfectly....but upside down.

Swivel varies by model. It's really a matter of weather the stand lets you tilt it 90 degrees. One easy way around this though is to just mount it on the wall. You can get the VESA mounts for ~$25 on eBay. Plus, if you're going to have it around your computer anyways, it'll save you the space by having it off your desk. Just check to make sure the monitor is VESA compliant. I don't think I've seen any current monitors that aren't, so it's not much to worry about.

EDIT: Buro, did you get the 21" FP from Dell? I think I recall someone mentioning over on the shmup boards that they switched a bolt around or something on the stand of that monitor to make it swivel the other way.

But yeah, a lot of recent verts on PS2 have both viewing modes, left or right... not sure if I recall Ikaruga having it though (at least on DC). The Cave ports do though (I think). So does MAME.

It does, but it doesn't flip the screen, it just changes the width/height of the TATE window. I was a bit depressed.

The VESA ones like subcons mentioned are slick, but if/when I get one, I want one with an arm. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if where my monitor would be mounted has the sufficient load-bearing capacity for it.

How much do the twenty inchers weight in at? I only had a 15", but it mounted up to the wall fine. I'm sure a wall can handle a larger monitor plus arm with the right mounting hardware. The one I had on my monitor came with pretty beefy bolts that went into the wall. Plus, different mounts/arms have different weight capacities.

Mounting is the only way to go in my opinion. I loved the way my desk looked with my studio display sitting on it and another monitor hooked up to my Mac at the same time on the wall behind it.

Samsung lists the weight as:
WEIGHT Net(Physical) 18.7 lbs.

But I don't know if thats the display itself, or the display and its base, which is pretty damned bulky and heavy.

Nice choice on the Samsung. Forgot you mentioned what you had earlier in the thread. That 18lbs. should be the monitor plus stand. Take it apart and hold one in each hand to see what chunk of that the monitor is.

This is the same exact mount I had on my monitor. I realize you want an arm, but this worked fine for me as far as adjustment went. And it's spec'd at 20lbs. I'd imagine an arm would cost a bit more of course.

It says yours is VESA compliant though. Hang it up. See if it falls off the wall.

Huh?

Vertical 1 - original tate mode

Vertical 2 - changes controller settings to play tate screen while TV is horizontal.

I swear thats what it is.
