I WANT A NEO-GEO AND I WANT ONE NOW.
However I just can't afford the cart prices and the only feasable answer for me is to steal and AES or buy a cd system (not a cdz-cant afford it!) So, are the loading times of the best games (kof'99 etc) really that bad??? How bad exactly? Are games still being released on cd? And how different are they from MVS + AES? Are the removed anim frames really that noticeable? Forgive me guys but are some of us being just a tad fussy??? Or is it just me? I just cant justify paying the AES prices...
HELP, before a break the law! GAAGHHHHHH!!! I WANT ONE

I've had both sytems CD & CDZ and to be prefectly honest neither are really that Bad.
The Std Neo CD does take some times on Games like KOF99 however it is only the really big MEGA Titles that Loading times are slow.! If you do by a NEOCD the +'s are much better than the -'s and at least you can afford access to some of SNK's great titles. If you need any further help or advice where to obtain a CD or even the software drop me an Email. I'm also in UK

Well the Neo CD is fine for older games (in terms of load time) such as NAM 75, Magician Lord, Alpha Mission II, Last Resort, etc. but for the newer games the load time is pretty bad. I have one, so I know. Your best bet would be to get a 1-slot Neo Geo MVS board that has the joystick connections on it, and a MAS Super NOVA or GW Trading HGA (to play through your TV) or a full-blown arcade cabinet. Then you can pick up almost all the games cheap on MVS. By far, the best way to go . . . but if you're in the UK be careful to get a PAL oriented system . . .

I've had a Neo CD for a long time and I recomend only getting mostly older game titles and skipping fighting game altogether. It can be tough to get a deal on a Home system, but I finally got one a year ago and have been picking up most of the fighters and have been able to do so on a budget. It takes time, but systems come up for sale all the time. I'm lucky enough to go to Japan often and I scored a used system in great shape with Sam sho 1 & 2 for about $120. You can get fairly close on eBay at times. Hope that helps.

I love my Neo cd. And although I would say it is not the best for the newer fighters (kof 94 and on) it is fine for the other newer games like Metal slug, twinkle star sprites, over the top. not to mention the cd only games like crossed swords and Samurai shodown RPG and the rare games like puzzle bobble. I always pull it out to play these games

I came across a web site selling a Playstation, old model gameshark like plug-in that would allow your PSX to play Neo Geo or Duo CD's and CDR's... I never bookmarked it or ordered from them, but its kinda neat that they exist.

I have a cdz, and unfortunately, the games that you mention does seem to load faster on the Ps. Esp, they did an excellent job w/ KOF:Evolution (much faster than KOF 98). Of course, Ps is stripped down when compared to Neo Geo cd, but the quality is very acceptable. Too bad about the sound, though. Most Neo Geo ports of Ps have muted sound, but it's understandable, thanks to the limited Ps memory.

BTW, KOF 99 is not the worst loading game for Neo Geo cd (infact I thought it was quite bearable). The longest loading game is LB 2. It's good thing I just sold my on ebay--I should have sold earlier, before the DC release, but was too lazy

LB2 is definately has the longest load times, hands down. Metal Slug 2 is definately
the most annoying by having to load in mid level.

I used to have a CDZ, And load times were pretty much really fast for all games that were not fighters.

Every KOF game past 94 has insanely long load times. I remember samurai 4's load times not being bad at all however..

In terms of value, availability, and durability, you really cant go wrong with the mvs format.Neo geo cds are getting more expensive, as collectors push the prices up, on some games music is better on the CD's, but on the major games such as the metal slug series , the music is identical from MVS/AES to CD.
Check out places like Supersellers( if you ever get an E mail answered or Video Connection or Cosmic for cheap mvs titles). And sometimes mvs carts come with jsut as much or more artwork than cds.You cant lose mate.

I can see what you guys say about MVS. It is affordable, but there is one thing you forget - space. You almost need to own your own home if you have an arcade machine. It can be tricky if you live in an apartment lugging around and setting up an MVS.

As far as the CD goes, the load times are ungodly and unbearable when it comes to last blade, I agree.

Another route would be the almighty Sega Saturn. Quite a few SNK games that are made for it, and they're very good. So far I have KoF 97, which I think is awesome; Metal Slug, which is the closest you can get to the real thing; Real Bout and Sam Sho Best Collection; and I'm waiting for my KoF 96. I don't mind the load times, they were pretty short for even KoF 97. Great graphics!!

Then consider getting a MVS converter. That's why I got a converter in the first place. I will most likely upgrade to Arcades converter after I hear more about it's performance.

KOF 96 is probably the best Saturn conversion in my opinion. It loads faster than 97, and it has the option to play in Eng.

I dont know why SNK didnt use the 4 meg cart for 97 or a few others. It was out, But they still went 1 meg.

97 could have been perfect with the 4 meg cart, 97 wasnt bad, But the sound was lacking greatly and there was some mediumly long load times.

I think the prob with most neo games on the saturn was the sound, SS 4's sound sucked IMO.

Does anyone know why it was so hard to port neo's sound to the saturn? Capcom seemed to do it ok...
