Been playin it the past few days when I got it for the Saturn..I'm honestly amazed at how well-done it is. KOF 96, IMO, is the first true evolution of KOF...well-balanced (not like that shit in 95...Benimaru was a cheap fuck), excellent music, and just damn fun.

The thing that struck me most is the music. The music is hands down the best soundtrack I've heard in a KOF yet, especially the AOF team's stage. It's a shame that the stages are re-used, but the music definitely more than makes up for it.

The Boss Team is not what I expected; not a bunch of moves to pull off, but damn they can dish out damage. Iori's team with Mature and Vice is great, though; prolly better than his 95 team with Billy and Eiji (sp.?)? I dunno yet.

In less than a month I've acquired the trilogy of KOF for the Saturn; 95 is easily the worst, 97 is excellent, but I need to spend more time with 96..perhaps better than 97, we shall see.

Any opinions on the Sat 96 ver.? Any loss of frames from the NG?

I should have said it was the worst of the KOF games on the Saturn to clarify.

IMO, 01 is my least favorite..

Yeah, '96 is a great game. I like it better than '97 and '95, also. Out of curiousity, does the Saturn port have the OST or the AST?

I'm also a big fan of KOF '96 - definitely some of the best BGM on the Neo, period. I also enjoy the gameplay, which to me seems like a very refined version of KOF '94 (another great classic). KOF '95 is ok, but the music is lackluster IMO and the changes to gameplay weren't really all that substantial. KOF '97 is a great game from a gameplay standpoint, but really the lack of BGM in some stages just kills me. I'd say that KOF '96 was the best of the first four KOF's, with maybe KOF '94 edging it out in the style category. Anyway, great game.

Just beat it the first time with Iori's team, this game is officially my favorite KOF. Dear mercy, Geonitz took out Rugal's eyeball! Crazy stuff.

So what happened with Iori at the end? Orochi rage..it was in Japanese and I can only assume he killed Mature and Vice.

If you're playing the Saturn version than there's an English text option if you don't want to turn to vgmuseum everytime you want an ending translated.

Not to mention '96 had the boss team, one of the coolest teams in my opinion. I think Athena's and Mr. Big's sprites look amazing. 2 of the best in the KOF universe even today.

Yeah, 96 is still my fave, closely followed by 02.

It seems that it was the year that SNK could do(nearly - Remember Kizuna) no wrong, what with that, Big Tournament Golf, Metal slug....

96 is great. Im not a big fan of the charge power meter but it has its benefits. I love how you can reduce your opponents charge meter with taunts. The Boss team was totally bad ass. And surprisingly not that unbalanced...well except for krauser's blitz ballzzzzz :kekeke: .

I miss the good old days. I remember King of Fighters '96 and Samurai Shodown 1 and 2 were some of the games that got me into SNK and the KOF series in the first place. I also thought KOF '96 was the funnest to play as it was actually the last year of the KOF series where we would have to fight every opponent in the game in order to beat the game. By, KOF '97, it got knowcked down to 6 teams and then facing the Orochi team.

KOF '96 was my favorite, and it also had Goenitz, the coolet KOF boss I had ever faught against. :p

Kinda weird how you all have played these games years and years ago...and I've played 3/4 of the series in just a month.

Those were the days. I remember the first time I ever 1CC'd it as well. In an arcade in Leicester where the staff said I was the only person to do so. This was well before I was able to afford the home card, hell I was about 17 at the time and still in school.

Fond memories.....
