I recall seeing several members like Verbatum insterested in this title, I started playing the Japanese release earlier today and sincerely, I am very pleased with it.
Graphically the game is really average, the textures aren't anything special, the main character models are good, but the enemies aren't special either - still, the game has very nice effects. When you cut (you will cut a lot), you will get to enjoy very nice lights and "traces", Boost will make your character shine, and also when the main character has no Limiter, he will sprout small lit wings ala Jehuty - these are just details, but very nice details.
The music and sounds effects are really good, some of the bgms are something you would expect from a Final Fantasy game, but for some odd reason, it fits the enemy slaughter and blood bath perfectly.
Gameplay, this is what it's all about. The controls are simple and easy to learn, but the combo variety and different modes/states it what makes this game really entertaining. While you advance through the game, you will get different combo chips to upgrade your abilities - you get new combos, level up existing ones, upgrade the power of different moves, get different transformations for your sword, etc. You manage all this via a grid system, so you can choose what to upgrade or not, really good.
After several combos and kills, you will get the "Limiter Off" automatically for a short period of time, and Jake (the main chara) will sprout small wings - this means that during that short period, you will deal massive damage, and more important certain combos will have upgraded abilities, like having 100% chances of slicing enemies in half, etc. Really nice to experiment with the potential of each combo.
There is also a Booster bar and different Booster abilities. You will fill up the bar by killing enemies, and when you activate Boost you will get access to these special abilities for a small period of time. This abilities are really useful, and will let you kill enemies with a single hit, reflect enemy lasers, etc.
This game is extremely gory. I played Project Altered Beast some days ago and I thought it was really gory, but NanoBreaker sets new standards - it's just too violent. You will slice enemies in whatever way you can imagine, horizontally, vertically, cut their head, arms, legs off... and don't forget the blood, there's blood everywhere, there's even a blood gallon counter at the bottom-right of the screen. I played for little more than an hour and my blood counter was over 2500 gallons of blood. Extremely violent and gory - but fun, definately fun, haha.
In the Options menu you can change the blood color (or "liquid", as the Options menu describes it) for several other colors.
Also, for those who are interested in importing it, the game can be set to full english menues and subtitles in the Options menu.
I hope you enjoyed my NanoBreaker mini-review!
