After more than one month without my neo (I'm in egypt for my work), I decided to get MacMame to play my neo games.
I DL KOF 94 and I was surprised to see how good it is. I didn't played the game a lot on AES and I'm regretting it.
I'm good looking, the music are OK to great (Pao Pao cafe stage), the animation is fine and the gameplay is excellent. No 99 hits combos here but I don't mind since I can't pull them anyway. You can pull some great stuffs and I'm was really to connect some special moves. Really, that's pure oldschool happiness.
I liked it so much that I decided to put a thread on it to share experience, tips and combos.
Here's my contribution:
Kim: Cross HK,Crouch LK*how much you can pull(3 for me),up+HK (some times you make a standing LK before making the special, looks nice)
Choi:Cross HP (two hits),crouch LK*how much you can pull, up+HP
This kind of combo can be used with the charge d, up moves.
Takuma: Jump HK, back crouch HK*how much you can pull,f+HK,fireball (I was amazed to see that it connect but the timing is tight). Charge db f+K opens for juggle so you can try other stuffs. tried with hcb+K in corner but it doesn't seems to work.
Robert:you can strike the opponent with jump HP and then make the Gouki style kick.
More to come when I'll find out.

To make this serious, I can say that I just don't like94. I think it sucks, but at the same time KOF is my favorite series of all time (now that Final Fantasy has taken the big shit)... But, if it weren't for 94, we wouldn't have had 96, 97, 98, 2k, or 2k2... IMO, GREAT games.

So, out of respect, I'm thankful for 94. At the time it was lovely, but it's really aged poorly, IMO.

Man, I love '94. It's really one of my top games on the Neo and definitely one of my favorite KOFs. Gameplay-wise, it's hard to compare it to say, '98, but I absolutely love the backgrounds, the music (China stage, Italy stage), and the character sprites. Great, great aesthetics.

I love KOF '94. SS is right about the gameplay system aging a little bit, but it's still a great game IMO, and the music and some of the backgrounds are just timeless. Of course it's much more simplistic than the later KOF's, but that's not always a bad thing - sometimes you just wanna have some fun without worrying too much about details.

This game, along with Samurai Shodown II, really got me into the Neo and for that I am eternally grateful. :)

this is off-topic but, ken dong, what game is the guy in your avatar from? I remember playing a game with that character a long time ago, he had a brother named Dan and I think his name was Nick and they lived in Boston, USA. I think they were rip-offs of Double Dragon.

Ok sorry for the "I'm good looking" I wanted to say it's looking good.
Of course it has aged but it has aged WELL.
I gave it an hour yesterday night and except the one frame Takuma animation, I don't see much of complaining about the game.
It has "living"backgrounds, I mean that you can spend a couple of minute to check all the animations and details. For example I noticed only yesterday that Geese was on the Pao Pao cafe stage.
Of course it hasn't the gameplay of the last KOF but you can still make some great matches (what matters the most after my idea).
I played at the MVS level difficulty and it's quite hard, harder than the last KOF IMHO.
My main critic is the A+B escape move slowing down the gameplay. I find it useful only with fb.
CPU has sometimes some insane priorities and some magical moves (kim going forward and suddenly pulling a charge d up+K out of nowhere) but it's still enjoyable.
My last found:
Ikari warriors's tap punch can juggle on the corner.
The tap punch attack of the Korea's big guy can block fb
Kyo back dp can connect with a lot of moves, more than I thought. Seems to not juggle (at least from what i have tried).
Speaking about Kyo, he's a well balanced characters (perhaps the most balanced of the game). His DM is hard to pull with a keyboard (*Hugh*) but except that he's just great.
More to come tomorrow.

Are you serious? His name is Kaede from Last Blade. No brother Dan. Weirdo.

Ok here's the entries of the day:
-Entering your name in the high score rank requires to beat the whole game in perfect or what? Insanely high scores.
-Rugal (first version) looks so weird, it's not even allowed.
-They fucked up the charge db,f+punch move of andy, you can't connect it with d+D like I used to do in FF2.Sad
-Joe looks as weird as Rugal (1st version). Sad bis.
- I discovered by surprise that A+B+C+D while you're grabbed or down launch a STRIKER from your team. So the first striker KOF was KOF 94!!

Now a question. Do you have an example of combo where you can connect a DM. please post since I never managed to pull one.
