I was flipping through my buddies new EGM and they listed their "top 10 greatest game machines" and the Neo Geo was no where to be found. Of course this didn't surprise me, since the neo never got the respect it deserved. It's hard to argure with most of EGM's list, but I can't believe they put the Gamecube ahead of it. I guess the Neo Geo is the Rodney Dangerfield of the video game world.

Nice last sentence... but I'm mainly replying in shock of the avatar. Haven't seen that in some time.

Edit: Out of curiousity, what ranked 10-1 in the mag?

8-Gamecube
7-Genesis
6-XBOX
5-PS2
4-GBA
3-SNES

I am not sure if I could replace one of these choices with the Neo, except for the Gamecube Maybe if the topic was "10 most innovative", I could see the neo listed.

As for my avatar, I was in a RH mood, so I choose it. I just wish there was a Wilco avatar.

Xbox has the Halo series and that's it, it does belong on any list yet. :shame:

GBA at number 4... wow.

The Xbox has no place there, agreed.

The Neo and Saturn should definitely be on the list somewhere... and the famicom kills the NES. ;) Huge difference ;) . 'Tis true, though. Anyway, the list could probably do well enough by keeping 1-3, dropping the rest, then adding the Neo Saturn for a top 5.

As for the avatar, there's a member here named CriterionRadiohead. He posted often many moons ago... I was a bit thrown when I first saw it.

I think its safe to say that there aren't many EGM fans here, myself included. They dissed Herzog Zwei and Last Resort with very low scores.

EGM is iPod, and faggot at the same time.

I miss the old EGM,circa 1990-1994. They used to be very informative and unbiased, but those days are long gone.

Well, NES has propably shaped the videogame industry more than any console ever, so I guess no.1 is justified.

But N64 in tenth place? Fuck that. It should be 2nd, because it has shaped MODERN videogaming the most. Without the analogue stick, Mario 64's and Ocarina of Time's 3D-camera, we'd still be hopelessly falling off cliffs with Lara Croft.

That's about what I'd expect from EGM. I think their main goal is to make sure that their 13 year old audience is able to recognize all the consoles on their top ten list.

Personally, I'd put the Neo ahead of the Xbox, Gamecube, PS 2, PS 1, GBA, and N64.

N64 doesn't belong on that list to begin with,so tenth is overly generous.

Word.

If the mag was run the way it was in the Semrad years, the PC Engine wouldve made the list. Personally, i wouldve had it and the Neo listed over the Gamecube and N64.

Yes, repeat that ten times, and maybe it'll become true.

Seriously, though. You call yourself a gamer?

Edit: Eh, I might as well go over the arguments BEFORE you start your unavoidable rant.

Like I said; it has shaped MODERN gaming the most. More specifically; Movement in, and perception of, 3D-worlds.

However, it's quite easy to dismiss these facts. Afterall, PlayStation and Saturn copied the analogue stick extremely fast, therefore sharing the huge revolution in game control. But one musn't forget the origin. (which, naturally, is all that counts)

"Borrowing" of software patents, such as Mario 64's camera, are a bit harder to prove due to their nature, but it's pretty clear that they shaped the 3rd person games of the next generation.

The N64 deserves to be on there for doing what the Jaguar, Playstation and Saturn could not do.

Quality 3D.....

Playstation should also be 10th.... Although it sold well, It marked (possibly caused) the downfall of Great gamming.

XBOX? WTF? what's so great about the XBOX?

Firstly, you have to accept that that is the #1 central driving force in "modern gaming". Then you have to ignore all the PC games that involve moving in a 3D world that came prior to N64. N64 built on what came before, same as Playstation did, and SNES did before that, and even NES building on what Atari, Collecovision, Intellivision, etc., did before that.

I will absolutely give you that the analogue stick was a huge advance, though.

The Neo absolutely belongs on any "top 10 game machines" list. It was a huge milestone in video game history and to not include it is BS. Back when the Neo first came out it was an all out juggernaut, nothing could touch it. It was the first machine to ever bring the actual arcade expierence home. Sure, it wasn't mainstream, sure it was priced hundreds above the competition but it was a pure bred 2D powerhouse that could do things that the competition could only dream of (and would continue to do so well into the late '90s, as far as 2D gaming was concerned). For that alone it deserves to be ranked.

As far as the 32 bit consoles are concerned, the N64 does deserve a place on the list. As has already been mentioned the analog controller that Nintendo brought out for the N64 pretty much set the standard for next gen gaming controllers, Mario 64 set the standard for next gen platformers and Goldeneye all but gave birth to the console FPS. Remember, this is all in relation to the historic implications on console gaming, so PC games don't factor in, no matter how you might bitch about it. Two different animals.

The Neo doesn't belong on that list.

Great system that has some kick ass games? Sure.

One of the BEST arcade platforms, ever? You betcha.

But it's not really a home console, the AES was and always will be something of a niche amongst home gamers. The Neo-Geo is an arcade platform more than anything else; it's biggest claim to fame would be fighters first, and maybe puzzlers and shooters getting a noteworthy mention. Neither its library nor it's innovations can stand up to the rest of the consoles that're on that list as a home console.

I'll keep the rest of my opinions on what should and shouldn't be on there for an Unrelated post since that's where that kind of thing belongs.
