Just beat the Twin Snakes, got a whole newfound respect for Kojima.

When I played the original MGS, I got to the torture scene, and a day later my import copy of Ridge Racer Type 4 arrived...I never looked back, ended up selling the game, never picked it up again.

A few weeks ago, I started playing MGS: Twin Snakes on the Cube. I loved the new graphics and more athletic cinemas, but since I'd already seen the beginning, I wasn't that possessed to play it. Time went on, and finally I got past the part I left off at. Then, in one 6 hour marathon, I plugged away and finished the damn thing.
What a great fucking game. I can see now why the series has become such a big deal, it's one of the few games with so much going on in terms of atmosphere, story, hidden things, etc. So much fun, I'm really tempted to play through it again immediately and get the better ending (I let Meryl die).

I'm half-tempted to skip MGS2 and just play MGS3. Any series vets have any recommendations?

Play MGS 2 first, MGS3 hints at things that happened in MGS 1&2. Save the best of the series for last. MGS3 is my now one of my favorite games of all time. The last battle is one of the most impressive battles ever.

Which version of MGS 2 would you guys recommend? PS 2 or Xbox? I heard that the Xbox version actually suffers from some problems that weren't in the original PS 2 version, and didn't get the facelift that I usually associate with Xbox versions of games.

Any advice?

Yep, MGS is an absolute classic. What Kojima did with the PS2 hardware was truly impressive.
I have never actually gotten past the first half of the game (MGS along with FFVII marked my departure from anything outside of quik play arcade gaming) but I have experienced enough to give it the props it deserves.

Go for the XBOx ver. It looks much smoother and you can run it in pro scan. It does suffer from some slowdown when it starts raining outside, but you're rarely in that situation anyways.

I'm used to the action slowing down like a motherfucker in shmups so not a biggie for me.

Yeah, there's a little bit in the rain scene, but it's far from crippling.
The Bawks version is also in 5.1 for you audiophiles out there.

Yep the Box version of MGS2 is definitely the better choice.

Thanks for posting those thoughts about Twin Snakes because the same thing happened to me believe it or not. RR4 came out and I just said fuck it to MGS. :)

I would go with the ps2 version of mgs2. Its got no slowdown at all. The Xbox version has slow down at the beginning and in a few other spots when there are alot of baddies on the screen.

You definitely got to play MGS2/Substance in order to enjoy MGS3 properly ;)

Also, you might want to pick up the Xbox version of Substance instead, since the PS2 version has been going for buku bucks on ebay as of late..:(

I feel you man. going back to game you overlooked in the past only to find its an absolute wonder is a great feeling. but more than this is what its like to play a game for hours on end until completing it. if and when you have the time to do this, it beats playing a game in parts because its a completly immersive experience that strips away the opaqueness from your mind and makes you feel that much less jaded. happens to me from time to time but much less than I would like (Blue Stinger definetly comes to mind).
anyway. please continue

Are the graphics any better on the xbox, or are they pretty much the same?

I'm only using stereo sound so the 5.1 thing isn't really a factor for me. Slowdown really irritates me, but I could probably overlook it if it were isolated and accompanied by nicer graphics.

Graphics are basically the same, with some minor graphical glitches in the Xbox version in addition to the slowdown. Call it a rushed port.

I'd go with the PS2 if you can get it cheap. The game was designed around the Duel Shock anway.

Thing is, the XBox version will at least be displayed in progressive scan, while the PS2 one won't. Just one more wrinkle to the debate.

My TV's pretty old, and doesn't even have component inputs, so that's basically a non-issue for me.

Keep in mind however, that the only time you get bad slowdown is when Snake is out in the rain on the Tanker, and when Raiden is swimming in a certain part towards the end of the game.

One of the graphical glitches I referred to was sometimes when you go into first person view, you will see this wierd white outline around you character. This is probably a complete non issue with almost every sane person on the planet, but it's there.

Well, I would go for the PS2 version. As listed above it has none of the slowdown problems, plus it's the authentic game. Play through MGS2 first then 3. There are those who hated 2, but the storyline was very nice and is one of the best games on the series, but 3 will blow you away. So playing 3 then 2 might be a dissapointment. I'm glad to see you found a new love.

Well, if you can't enjoy pro scan, then I'd say just go for whichever you find cheaper. The slowdown in the xbox ver is far from ruining the experience and the graphics look a tad smoother, even with no pro scan.

The control in the xbox ver is just fine, maybe even better than the ps2's, since I really hate those loose ass joysticks. Again, just go for whichever you find cheaper, but don't miss out on it.

Loopz, if you wanna get the full MGS experience, then play them in order.

Playing part 3 will leave you speechless, something part 2 probably will not accomplish if you play it after. So it's best to play 2 first.

MGS 3 = MGS TTS > MGS2

Keep in mind that MGS2: Substance also has VR Missions and slightly altered scenerios separate from the main game. So, if you really dig the gameplay, you can find a little more of it in Substance as opposed to the original version of MGS2.

Sounds like the XBox version is easier to find and more affordable than the PS2 version.

Definitely play 2. The thing that really honked fans off when the game came out was that you spend 75%(+) of the game playing not as Snake. You already know this, so you should be fine. That's how it happened for me when I finally played it last Summer. I was ready to be as disappointed as anyone else, and ended up enjoying the hell out of it.

Play MGS3, MGS: Twin Snakes & then MGS2
because MGS3 is set before the other 2 games.
Either MGS2: Sons of Liberty or MGS: Substance
which is MGS2. :kekeke:

At the local gamecrazy I'm pretty sure I saw substance for the box at 15 bucks new, and the PS 2 version used for like 10. I forget how long ago it was, but I'm sure it wasnt that long ago. Check around for any GameCrazy stores (hollywood video) in your area. They dont keep track of game prices and jack them up like EB, Gamestop, and turds on Ebay do. I got my copy of Substance for PS2 when I worked there 10 months ago for $10.00 new.
