Exactly how good are all of those ports to other systems than AES or MVS?
About the only portgame I own right now is World Heroes for SNES, and damn, it really sucks!

I've done som reading and I'm guessing the best ports are for Dreamcast? Seems to be some good games like MotW and KOF. Any suggestions of which games are worthy of purchasing and which games one should avoid?

The generally used term for what you are referring to is 'ports', as in "ported to another system".

As a rule of thumb, it seems the best ports are on the saturn amd the DC. I've done side by side comparisons, AES vs Saturn, DC, PS1, PS2, Xbox.

The DC, PS2 and Xbox do fine ports. The Saturn is hit (Real Bout Special, MS) and miss (SS3). The PS1, and anything older, seem miss and miss. The sound is often the most obvious problem with PS1 ports IMO.

Some ports are respectable, many are not. 16 bit ports seem to suck, as a rule.

Ahh, sorry for the mistake *n00bish smile* :) edited the post to make it right. . .

I'm buying a Dreamcast tonight actually, so any suggestions of which games I should purchase? I've heard also that for example Metal Slug for PSX is a really bad port, PS2 seems a bit too flashy, I'm more of an old school 2D gamer. :D

I'd have to say that both my NGs and Saturns are the best two consoles for 2D games. The DC too if you want a very small selection of 2D games - which by the way are fantastic. Saturn has so many cool shooters though if you like shooters (eg: DoDonPachi is my favourite). Luckily quite a few are being rereleased for PS2 though in case you don't have a saturn (eg: Sengoku Blade) and a few new PS2 ones are also cool (eg: ESP Galuda).

For DC: KOF Evolution, KOF DM99, KOF2K, KOF2k1, KOF2k2, MOTW, LB2, LB2Final, Capcom Vs SNK, Capcom Vs SNK Pro, Capcom Vs SNK 2, Marvel Vs Capcom, Marvel Vs Capcom 2, SF3 Double Impact, SF3 Alpha, SF 3rd Strike, SF2, Vampire Chronicles - that's probably the cream of the 2D on DC...

Ahh, thanks for the tips, I've thought about buying a Saturn as well, since I know it's quite 2D oriented, but there seems to be more great Neo Geo ports for the Dreamcast. Also I want to try out thouse Shemnue games I've heard so much about :D

Yeah I know what you mean and its suck big time because it not like the original neo-geo or mvs, most of the neo-geo games that are ported for other system like Sega Genesis, Snes, PS2 and Xbox lacks in gameplay and a lot of other stuff that you would not find it the original neo-geo. Its sad days for neo indeed. :crying:

You can change it to "Neo Slowdown" version through the options menu. However, I'm not sure if you can change the soundtrack. Do tell.

Neobomberman has a good list of ports . . . somewhere.

I'll post the link in a moment.

EDIT: Eureka!

If you have a modded or import PS2 there is a chance for some decent ports, and that old style joystick for a more neo feel too. They are soon to release in Japan KoF collections. KoF 94 was already released with both a remastered version and the original, 95-98, then 99-01 are coming as collectors sets, 2000/01 are already out in the states and 02/03 are set to come out as well. There is also word of MotW and a Last Blade 1 and 2 set. With all this in mind I have been very tempted to buy an import PS2.
I have also heard very promising things about SF AC on ps2. Now, I am not a tourney level player on that game, but those that are say the DC version has a touch of lag that causes problems when you do difficult parries like an entire alpha string, but the ps2 is evidentally fixed in that regard.
Unfortunately, I would avoid Sam Sho on any system asside from the Neo though. Maybe its the size of the spirtes, but for some reason those games are burdened with abysmal loading times. Some suggest that if you get Sam Sho 5 for PS2 and a HD loader kit so you can copy it to the HD rather than playing it from the disc it is much better, but those same people tend to say you have to do it in a roundabout fashion because SS5 doesn't work if you just copy it to the HD.
The only other major game I can think of you can get as a port is Real Bout which has a collection for the Saturn that came out very good. The only reason I sold it was because at the time I had a deal for Real Bout 2 and it was similar enough to RB special (some say the best game in the series) with an extra 2 characters in it. If you have a Saturn, like 2d fighters, and don't have them on the AES/MVS the Real Bout collection is a must own.
As for the DC the above poster is correct, KoF Evo (99)-02 are good games, as are the others he mentioned. The only reason I don't put KoF 99 Dream Match (this is KoF 98) in that list is because every time a new character loads in a 3v3 match the music starts over. This may be nitpicky, but damn is it ever annoying. Some matches are over in 30 seconds or less and you get to hear the exact same song start all over sometimes 4 and 5 times in a row. If you can put up with that its fine. Speaking of sound MotW is known to have delayed sound effects. Its nothing drastic, but the hits sound like a half second behind. And then Last Blade 2 has a specific controller mapping that you are limited in your options to change. It only uses the 4 face buttons on the DC controller for the main buttons. The triggers are auto mapped and unchangable. It took me a bit to get used to that configuration after playing it on the Neo so long. Again, I am picky I know.

Hope this all helps.

RE: Shenmue

I have both games on the DC and personally think they are amazing and well worth getting. As much as I like the games I do find however that people tend to either love the games or hate them. Personally love them and can’t wait for a new Shenmue game. As far as I know it’s an online version.

Thanx for all the info boys and girls. One more question though. . . I actually bought a Dreamcast today (with Shemnue and other cool games), but the controllers are fucking killing my thumb while playing SNK vs Capcom 2, and the analog joystick feels just wrong to use. Are there any good arcade style controllers for the Dreamcast?

The best non custom made stick I have found for it is the agetec one (white, gray with bright green buttons and stick). It is Japanese style with convex buttons and ball top stick though. If you are looking for a US style bat top stick and concave buttons you might have to look at some of the custom stick makers around the forums or look into building your own.

Here is a link to the stick I use, but its been out of production for a while so ebay is your best bet to find one: http://www.lik-sang.com/image.php?category=28&products_id=43&img=dc-arcadestick

given the choice of the PS2 or DC versions though, consider that the PS2 doesn't have VGA output, but the PS2 versions *do* work from your harddrive.

Metal Slug on Saturn, and SVC chaos on PS2 are both dead on. With almost no difference.
