mvs carts - are they worth collecting?

Currently I have quite a lot of MVS games, they are all lose carts (except for 1) and most are in poor->average condition (definately they had a lot of use/mis-use before I got them).

Some of the game I just love playing, but is it worthwhile getting rid of my old used poor condition MVS carts and buying nice new kits?

I am a collector of games on most other consoles, but the NG I have debated time & again whether it is justifyable to spend so much money on - can you convince me one way or another?

(I have an AES and NG CD also, but I only have 2 crappy AES games and the CD load times bug the hell out of me - AES collecting I reckon is way too expensive, but the packages are really nice looking...)

what to do...

You have to find your own reason to collect Neo Geo if youre going to do it. Its really an expensive hobby so if one day you decide its not a hobby for you then you have to get rid of all of these games. Now if you already to collect then its a different story. Its all a money issue if you want to collect. There are lots of ways you can go with gaming.

I prefer AES, but I do have a Phantom and it is fun to play around with the MVS carts.

I dont prefer CD because the actions slows down so it would kill a game like Metal Slug.

You have to find your own reasons to collect if you are going to collect. If you enjoy RETRO then its a good thing. If you are getting in because of collecting then you should overlook the price because 99% of the time you wont be getting a great deal.

Still hard to not consider the $$$ when collecting. Even though I collect (some might say horde - http://zhulien.kicks-ass.net/games/gamesfull/index.htm for my collection) I still try to get value for money. The reason I got the MVS was that I loved the cabinet and the NGCD I had was just too slow. But... the NGCD works on my large TV and the cabinet cannot compare picture-wise. I have a feeling if I cannot get a consolised MVS at a sane price, I might be better off just getting a Phantom-1 and living with the carts I have already (and flogging off the games I don't like).

I would say that is the way to go. If you like your MVS enough then you might eventually move on to AES if you are into collecting. If you want to play the games then go for MVS. Some AES games are too expensive to risk damaging them.

So it looks like you have a plan. Hope everything works out.

I collect AES. I have a shelled Phantom-1 that works PERFECTLY in my AES.

I do buy MVS carts. Serials burned off with a cigarette butt, fine. Label worn away or scribbled on, fine. Who cares, it's a friggin MVS cart. :D

When I buy AES, it's gotta be near mint and complete. I will re-unit orphaned bits if forced, but it's gotta be nice.

I don't 'get' MVS collecting, unless you have a real Neo cab, and collect kits, so you can use the marquees and stuff.

My personal opinion only. ;)

My cabinet is an official 6-slot cabinet, I only have 1 marquee in it though as all my other games were lose carts. What's with the serials? Why are they important? and why would anyone remove them?

Full MVS kits and mint AES carts are really the only things worth collecting. Buy mvs bare carts for playing, as they're not gonna be worth much and aren't the most beautiful things in the world.

Nice idea, but the carts I have don't deserve a shockbox.

so make a reprinted label....I have some ugly-ass carts I made new labels for and cleaned up and put in shock boxes...now they look great compared to what they did look like. I know some people say  to reprinted labels for the cart...but I think they can look pretty sweet...again, its just an MVS cart.

Here is a label i made... just fill in the blanks... I have even recreated the texture in the grey with tiny dots.. looks pretty authentic after the printout

(copy this image directly to HD and edit in the game with photoshop, pick a font carefully for it has to repersent the game being played)

Here is a example of the label after printout (i used glossy paper for this one, prints out nicer and a little different)

yeah, I put even my crappiest looking MVS in shockboxes, with nice glossy inserts. I'm actually going to get labels for the carts themselves printed, as well, perhaps colour spines too.

Essentially, they are *just* loose MVS, with worn off serials, so who cares about original at this point. I'll likely be using my Metal Slugs and Garou on MVS for quite some time, so they might as well hold their own on the bookshelf next to SSVS AES and KOF 2002 AES. :D

But they aren't 'collected'. They are for playing. The MS1 and the Garou MVS are just placeholders, until some unforeseeable day when I own minty AES versions.

Come on AES crash! Come on!!! ;)

Loose MVS carts are fine for showing off. :)

Maybe not to your friend who has a collection of mint AES games like Blazing Star, Garou, etc.
But anyone who's only played Neo Geo on emulators are bound to find it cool to play the original version. And if you have a cabinet for your MVS, you'll be the most popular kid in school. :P

Shockboxes are expensive enough to be a show off in their own right. :P

I'm more or less kidding.

Only hi value AES carts I have are SSVS unfixed, MS5, and MS3, and in the grand scheme, those aren't really that high value.

At least not yet.

I think this whole topic is really dependant on why your collecting the games...
If its for them to become worth money later on then I guess only MVS kits should be collected.

Myself personaly I collect Neo-Geo games to play them, not to sit them on a shelf and wait for them to be worth more like a comic book or whatnot.

I have an AES, NGCD, and MVS...I buy the games that I love and can reasonably afford on the AES...the ones I cannot afford on AES..I buy on MVS and dress them up with nice shockboxes and inserts...the games I love the music in to an extreme..I have also on my NGCD.

So..to me they are all worth collecting because I love to play the hell outta them, and enjoy them. But if I were only collecting them for eventual financial gain I recon I'd stick with AES and/or MVS full kits.

Of course they are!...keep your mvs carts & if you have the space then invest in a decent mvs cab for them for the max effect!!! top stuff :D

cheap and cheerful.. and stick with the original snk carts, it makes sense :buttrock:

Honestly I bought all my MVS carts to 'try' and 'play'. Some I really don't like I will eventually trade or sell, but some are totally awesome and that's why I bought up the question. Not so much because I want to keep my loose carts of them, but whether it was worthwhile replacing them with new MVS or AES carts. To some degree the condition of the carts will probably deteriorate if I left them in the MVS cabinet or used the AES ones on my AES console (just got an AES less than a week ago), but then I'd have to consider that. For other consoles, for the most part, I just opened my new sealed games. I figured although nice sealed, why just let them sit there. In most cases things I bought remain in the bought condition, sadly not everything I buy is as new.
