I just got my latest issue of Game Informer, in a small paragraph under "loose talk" they make mention of a cooperative effort between Miyamoto and Square Enix.

Game Informer said:
While Nintendo is no fan of online play, company luminary Shigeru Miyamoto recently did reveal that the publisher/developer is working with Square Enix on an online title for the Nintendo DS. With Miyamoto saying that he doesn't expect online to become big until three to four years from now, hopefully we won't have to wait that long for this mysterious collaboration to hit the shelves. And God help us if there's a bucket involved.

If you didn't know I have a shrine in my house dedicated to Miyamoto.

A big :spock: to Miyamoto here. Online shit was big 10 fucking years ago. AOL took over the internet way back then. People were playing Doom, Quake, Warcraft, and whatever else modem-modem, TCP-IP over the net way back in the day.... WTF?

In 3 or 4 years??
Ugh. I was hoping for something more like 3 or 4 months.
This just shows how absolutely ass-backward Nintendo can be at times. DS WiFi LAN capability is of very little use to me since I don't know anybody else that owns one.

3 to 4 years? Maybe then fighting games online won't have any lag. Maybe Miyamoto is looking for that time period where there is NO way or possibility to get lag. Either way, they need to build on their experience and not just jump in 3 to 4 years from now.

All the man said was that he doesn't expect it to become big until 3-4 years from now. Compared to the PC, online gaming in the console market is quite small, and compared to the amount of software is just as small. So I see his comment being geared more toward console online gaming become "big" as in the way that PC games have gone online. Having an online plan, and 30% or so of your titles online isn't exactly what I think of as big. Remember, such things are subjective. Either way, it's been said from various sources that Nintendo and Square-Enix are working together on some online things relating to the DS, and that certainly shows that they are looking to start expanding into the area.

Read between the lines a bit...

If you know anything of online play/capabilites, it *costs* money to support online play. A lot of money.. for little return. The reason MS can do it is they have a subscription service, it pays for itself.

The GCN isn't big enough to warrant the cost, and who knows how the DS will do. (say it all you want, it sold consoles, but it's not "installed" yet.) So why would Nintendo, who can't really afford a massive failure, take a risk like that? I know they're sitting on $$$, but it's not like they're doing gangbusters with the GCN. They're in War mode right now with the PSP looming. They're going to concentrate on guaranteed wins over the PSP so they can knock Sony out of the box.

Nintendo has said before, well with the release of the GCN, that they won't be making any online games because it isn't profitable. Which is all the are interested in. So this is very understandable to me. I just don't see what will really sell the Revolution when it seems like there will be no first party online games. There goes my dream of a MMORPG Pokemon...

No, that's not exactly what they actually said.

They've always admitted they will eventually need to go online (what's keeping them? dunno)

As for the famed huge "XBox LIVE", XBL has had what sales to tout? One million?

It's a small percentage of even XBox users at best. Only the rather skewed perspective of XBox LIVE players has convinced themselves it's really helping MS all that much. LEt's face it, if you aren't into 2d fighting games, XBL is hardly more impressive than PS2's online gaming, except you have to pay a fee for it too. The vast majority of XBox users are happily offline at this point still.
