Ahh. Now that's pretty cool. I've been playing most of these nowadays, through some emulation. Having the full real deal for free is nice.
Generally, the games were not "always intense" like Doom. They tend to concentrate a bit more on story. They did have some scripted events and in-fighting and stuff. Those were probably a first in the FPS industry. Nice for nostalgia, but better if you're one to enjoy the story they infused in the games.
If an oldschool "always intense" shooter is what you want, I tend to think Serious Sam does the job.

this game set so many goddamn firsts in FPS'.... The problem is it's been copied so much it seems derivitive.
Try it out and think "Wow, this was 1994?" The problem is the hardcore only discovered this game for a long time.
This game trashed DOOM then, and it aged *far* better.
What sucks is how much I paid for the Action Sack last year on ebay and this came along..
Oh well, I've got an insane Bungie collector's item out of it.

I remember when my pops brought home a shareware version of Marathon II from a buddy of his at work. . I was like "What game is it?" He just said, "You'll see." He loaded it up to our PowerPC and I double clicked on the Marathon II icon. "Marathon? This like Doom, dad?" "Its like Doom, but only better," simply replied. And he was right. My pops, my bro, and I played well into the night, it was fanstatic. Its one of the few games I actually remember my father getting hooked on, perhaps the only one. Oh well, it was good times.

it says windows compatible versions coming soon, will we be able to play these on windows?

I guess they are working on a full windows version that doesn't require Aleph One.
You can use Aleph One to run these now in windows. (Aleph One is a Marathon engine in which you load the current Marathon data files into, to play the games.) Kind of like a Doom emulator that loads the various wad files that contain the content for each Doom chapter.
In order to get Marathon 1, you must follow the link on that page to nab the Aleph One compatible version of Marathon 1. The old default Marathon 1 package doesn't run on Aleph One.
