I'm planning to get a Bravo D1 dvd player that upconverts through dvi. I've found a picture of the back of the unit:

BRAVO_D1_BACK.JPG

According to this page the connector is a DVI-I connector. I just checked on the back of my hd set and it has what looks to be a DVI-I connector without the 4 pinholes and vertical slot on the right hand side.

Could someone tell me if all DVI cables could accommodate this setup or would I need a special cable? Could you please recommend a nice DVI cable also?

-Thanks

In that picture is a DVI-I connector wihich contains both digital and analog interfaces.

And it sounds like your HD set is equipped with a DVI-D connector wich is only for digital.

DVI-D Singlelink cable is optimal for that setup, I'd say.

I wouldn't recommend using the DVI connector unless you have a fixed pixel display (plasma/LCD) otherwise the picture will lose a deeper black level and give you a softer image compared to a component cable.

Yeah, but the d2 is pretty hard to come by. Also from what I hear it's not that much of an improvement... or is it?

Just slightly, but more in the looks department.

So, what kind of tv do you have?

It's a samsung rear projection. Right now I'm using a 5 disc sony dvd changer that I got in a bundle deal with my wega. The player only does 480i.

Edit: I running through component and the image is really fuzzy.

Progressive scan will help clear up that fuzzieness, trust me you dont want to use the DVI for you tv. Criterionradiohead just picked up the new samsung pedistal dlp tv and we gave it a go with both dvi and component and component was deffinatly the superior connection.

Sorry none upconvert yet. I say a 480p picture is still very sexy on the right equipment. I wouldn't worry about it. HD DVD is going to be comming soon anyway.

I would say at least give DVI a try, as it is a digital connection and component is analog. The DAC in your TV for DVI might be better than the DAC in the DVD play for component.

Even if the component turns out to look better for DVD, you can connect a computer through the DVI connector so the DVI cable wouldn't be a waste.

I've heard nothing but killer reviews for the Bravo D1.

Right now I have like 4 things that run through component and only 2 component inputs on my tv. This is one reason I would like to use dvi for my dvd player.

If I can get a quality dvi cable cheap enough I'm probably going to checkout that out. I'll need like a 10ft cable, but they get freaking expensive.

Did you try looking at Newark Electronics? I went to Circuit City and they wanted around $100 for a DVI cable... unbelievable, but expected. Newark has them for less than $40.

No I haven't, but I'll check em out though. If you think $100 is bad... A local A/V store sells monster dvi cables for $300!!!

I though I was going to pickup a bravo d1 for a $50 on ebay, but it went too high for a refurb... Soon I'll get one my friends soon.

HD DVD will be out this year, just wait, do not waste money on a bravo player, use your current 480p progressive scan player till then. more to the point DVI is already out, HD DVD will use HDMI.

DVI Gear is the shiznizzle for DVI equipment. Their prices are decent and they have an awesome selection of quality items.

DVI & HDMI-based DVD players seem like a non sequitor in the market right now. Most newer TVs wil accept digital signal in some form of DVI or HDMI connectors, but most (if not all) of the signal processing is done by the DVD player since DVI is treated as a passthrough.

Unless all of your content is in HD already, I'd stick with component and awesome video processing.

DashK brings up a good point about next generation DVDs, but neither Blu Ray nor HD DVD have emerged as the content winner.

I doubt people will be willing to replace their existing DVD collections with these new formats as well since you'd need a several thousand dollar TV to see the difference between the formats.

Heck, you can already buy high definition audio formats (SACD and DVD-A) but no one does because they are accustomed to CDDA.

HDMI is DVI with audio.

I don't even have a progressive scan player yet...

DVI Gear's stuff looks great, but it's pretty high. $70 for a 6.5' cable.

DVI Gear is essentially one of the cheapest prices for high-quality components. Tons of places will sell DVI and high-end video cables for cheaper but too often the quality difference is easily noticable.

A group of us at work bought their Video to DVI converter for testing out video games on high end LCD panels and were impressed with the results. The box was not cheap but blew away any of the Video to VGA boxes out there.

We tried scaling the video to 1920x1080@60Hz on a 23" LCD and it was rather blurry, but rather amazing as well considering it was upsampling to true 1080i/60...

My local Kings store sells 10 meter (30 ft) HDMI and DVI cables for less than $200. Those prices are ridiculous.

My LCD tv came with a couple DVI cables. One that would be for DVD players and one thats an SVGA-DVI cable to connect your PC to the tv and I have to say that I am really impressed with the video quality of DVI

If I were you I would forget the Bravo DVD player.

For a little more money you could buy the Iodata player for $250.

It has HDMI output (bravo doesnt). It supports Windows media 9 playback in 720p and 1080i (Bravo doesnt support WM9). It does all the upscaling jiggery pokery and its a network DVD player to boot.

So you can use the on board USB port to upgrade the firmware really easily. You can stream pictures, movies, HD content in .TS format (Divx) straight to your TV/projector with no fuss.

Its probably the best unknown commodity available today in the Entertainment industry. So i'm here to tell you about it. The only downside to the player is that it weighs 14lbs.

Go get one today!
