well this is my favourite genre by far.

I have been playing Dynamite Cop on Dreamcast to death these past couple of days and I must say that I've been having a great deal of fun. I'm not sure why I didn't get into it when I bought it some months ago, and I know its not a favourite amongst gamers (too short and all that), but I absolutely love it (it feels so much like an interactive albeit bizzare action movie), haven't had this much fun since Rushing Beat 2. very intense.

so what else is out there that's current? and what do people consider to be the best of modern day side scrollers (of which there are very few admittedly)? anything on import?

I only played 10 minutes of Demolish Fist at the arcades but I didn't find it to be anywhere near as much fun as Dynamite Cop - am I missing something?

Personally, I love Demolish Fist, but you can look up my review for that.

Others:

Sengoku Vs. Gendai: My personal fave of the modern Beat-em-Up's that hit close to the style of old. Cheesy Characters, great BG's, and wonderful music.

The Splatter action: Simple, goofy but fun. Think Splatter house meets Tim-Burton meets a twisted childhood Haloween Fantasy.

Sengoku Senki (Knights of Valour: The Seven Spirits).: Good Basic Beat-em up for the AW. Nice hand-drawn Sprites, decent BG's, and a great challenge.

One of my fave game types for sure!!!

you could get something older, i absolutely loved fighting force on PC with 3D hardware acceleration. Else i love 2D "brawlers" like irem undercover cops or SNK mutation nation (cheap on MVS and neocd). :)

good stuff. Verbatum, I will be looking over your review of Demolish Fist.
I personally don't like 90% of Neo Geo side scrollers (though I can't help loving burning fight even though it plays badly. same goes for Ninja Combat). I feel Mutation Nation is really boring and verging on unplayable. Undercover Cops is great on the other hand (similar theme superior execution).
Even though this is a genre I adore, the amount of bad games to good ratio is huge. but when the games are good they are absolut6ely excellent.
how does PS2 Sword of the Berserk play?

Sengoku 3

Compare this to the first Sengoku (yes, they're two relatively different games) and you'll be amazed to see just how far the Neo has come since its inception. Large characters, smooth animation, appealing graphics, great soundtrack, a nice combo system. Why people continue to hate the game is beyond me.

its kind of the same thing for me, as I just use the term side scroller as a description of the genre. I forgot all about Spikeout. played it years back and wanted to like it but I never got it. what's so good about it? good number of moves and weapons?

Sengoku 3 could have been great, but the lack of a charismatic enemy for me killed it. most of the fun in these games is beating up colourful enemies.

ill tell you one thing the game is still popular wherever you find it in arcades here (especially 4 linked machines) and youll find ppl lining up to jump on.

whats good about it?

*when you are good at it one game can last over an hour.

*the games got a combo engine with juggling as deep as tekken or something.

*the tactics when taking on groups of enemies and the ability to strategically maneuver them into a more beneficial position far outweighs the strategy required in something like final fight or streets of rage (though i love those games).

*the tricks in the games are cool, i can still remember how cool i thought it was when i watched some japanese experts playing and learnt how to do the stun repeat combo, very useful against bosses, grab the boss, push the jump button to get behind them, jump up and when in the air build bar, land and as they turn (they automatically break the throw when you land) let go and stun them with the the 2nd level attack that you charged (it dizzys them), rinse and repeat.

*no cheap hits, get good enough and you could go through the whole game untouched.

etc, etc

I remember reading a neo-geo.com topic about "under rated games" and The Bouncer was praised as a good beat-em-up so you might want to check them out. Sometimes a game can suck, but as long as your playing with a buddy and having a great time, it can always make up for lack luster quality. So grab a buddy and play these games:

Gekido
Star Wars: Jedi Power Battles
Crisis Beat: This game is a Japan only import.
Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Well, I was trying to stick to pure beat em ups, but the boost mode in Isuka is indeed a top-quality 2-D beat em up!!!!!! Worth the price of admission alone!

If you want 3-D Beat-em-ups, look no further than Chaos Legion. You won't regret it!!!!

that sounds like its right up my alley. awesome.
and people, final fight is indeed superb in every way, but this has already been established tenfold.

Is Dynamite Cop 2 as good as the first? I loved the fight with the Octopus in the original. :kekeke:

X-Men Arcade that Konami made which had
4 or 6 players I think, I can't remember.
I like playing as Wolverine in his original outfit.
They had an X-Men cartoon that never aired which I
had on VHS which it is very rare to find. It was made
in the 80's. I bought it brand new from Blockbuster
Video in 1995. I don't have it anymore. :(

X-Men Arcade was a fun beat'em up game since TMNT
Arcades or The Simpson's Arcade. Spiderman Arcade
was another fun Arcade game as well too. ;)

The following beat'em up Arcades I have played are,

Captain America and the Avengers
Captain Commando
Dungeons & Dragons: The Tower of Doom
Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mysteria
Metamorphic Force
Spider-Man
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: Turtles in Time
X-Men

I played more though. ;) :kekeke:

Both. There was a dedicated dual screen 6 player version and dedicated/conversion 4 player version ;)

They need to be on the PS2 as a
collection. :)

Or I'll just get the motherboards for
the Supergun or Super Nova Arcade
System. Hopefully their is no suicide
battery in the motherboards. :)
