Any opinions on those games? I just got SS4.

Why? You just paid for the Neo Geo CD version but with tons of slowdown and muffled sound effects.

I'm sorry to say.

Saturn SS4>Inferior port suffers from slow down.

Saturn SS3>Pretty close to the real thing.

There ya go :spock:

I'd agree with that, the Saturn versions just don't feel right, especially 4 which also suffers from pretty poor sound effects.

Maybe he bought the game to complete his Neo Geo CD collection. Just because he bought the game doesnt mean he thinks its better.

don't pick naka or gaira in ss4. your saturn might not be able to handle the sprites :kekeke:

I owned this back when the capcom vs games were first releasing and I figured as good as they were on Saturn the snk games would be good as well. Samurai Shodown 3 was decent, but the load times were a bit annoying. Samurai Shodown 4, which is why I really bought the collection, was ASS. The loading times were annoying and there are definately frames missing and bad slowdown. This collection is the single reason I broke down and bought a Neo AES coupled with Sam Sho 4 off a message board. Oh, and I can just about guarantee you each and every time you jump anywhere near Gaira he will grab you and you will have no recourse due to slowdown and frame skips.

I bought SS4 because I'm finally an owner of a modded Saturn and wanted to get some 2D fighters; I don't even own a Neo-Geo *gasp, blasphemy!* because it just seems so expensive, as do the games...I'm fine with settling down for ports.

I own the American PS1 version of SS3 and I actually like the game itself, despite the horrible port...then again, I've never played SS2, which from what I hear is the best in the series.

Too bad to hear about the SS4 port to be bad, though I might still enjoy it since I love the series mainly for its excellent atmosphere. The art looks like crap though, did SNK hire another artist for the box art and whatnot?

Slowdown on the SS4 Saturn port? That's news to me. The Playstation ports of SS3 and 4 had lots of slowdown, but the Saturn ports were fine. The only problems I noticed were the few frames of missing animation and a few sound issues. Other than that they were great. In fact the Saturn version of SS4 is the only one I have.

Hmm, perhaps the others played it without the 1MB RAM cart? I have the 1MB RAM cart, just came in today with Waku Waku 7. So I'll be playing SS4 with that.

I believe you have to have the 1 meg ram cart and at any rate I did. Play the game at the arcade and on the Saturn. Difference is night and day. If SNK had used the 4 meg capcom ram cart instead of a 1 meg one the game would have played fine I am sure. After all, the capcom vs games worked well on it and they have 4 people's moves to animate. Would still have had load times, but would have been ok. As for the slowdown, it mostly occurs when you fight as/against big characters like Gaira and if I recall Amakusa. Ultimately, you have to play it for yourself and judge if it is an annoyance to you. I just loved the SS series in the arcades so much that even though I am now looking to get rid of a lot of Neo games I will still be keeping that series. Also, if you like Neo games KoF 96 and 97 as well as the Real Bout Collection are pretty good on Saturn.

SS3 on Saturn very good port. No English mode, or training option.
SS4 on Saturn ok port. English mode. Fine with normal or small sized characters. Big characters, slowdown is somewhat bad.
SS1 & SS2 on PS1 very good port. Very Hard to find, and expensive. $100 plus.

If you don't have a Neo, these versions of the first 4 Samurai games are the best.

It really doesn't matter, if he never played the arcade version then he will never know what he is missing. A good Neo port on the saturn is Metal Slug which is better than the Neo Geo CD version and if you use the 4MB Ram cart to play it has no load times.

I agree, the 1 meg RAM boost made things much better. SS4 played really well for me and the Saturn pad is really simple to use with the SS games. To each his own.

snk on saturn

So far I actually enjoy the games on the saturn better the I did on the stock aes system I had, I haven't noticed any noticeable differences so far, real bout special is my favorite at this time, Geese kicks ass. Sam Show 3-4 are also great games for the saturn, I actually like 4 better then 3, for the graphics and gameplay, imo the saturn is the poormans way to go definately better then psx for snk.

The one advantage the SS ports on the PSX, and Saturn have, is the pads.

Especially the Saturn.

i had the Samurai Spirits III & IV pack for Sega Saturn (sold it a while back)--they both played considerably well! and yes, i actually owned the MVS versions of both and compared them. i played them on my Saturn with the 4 MEG Action Replay cart (which boots imports on a US system). i never really noticed any slowdown, especially in Samurai Spirits IV.........now the PlayStation imports are another story. they play OK, but SSIV has this annoying way of completely STOPPING just as the round starts, then they allow you to actually fight.

yeah, i'm a sucker for Samurai Shodown---i think i've owned nearly every version of SS-SSIV--original, port, or otherwise (worst by far was SS on Genesis :eek_2: ).
