Out of curiosity, how many would rate this as one of the best in the Fatal Fury/Real Bout series?

It is a good game, but I will give RB the prize. It has (I need a storyline) good storyline--finally where Geese dies--and a unique funny knock out matches that is unlike in any of FF/RB series. Also, to me, it plays like a modern fighting game.

I like FF Special but hate dodge and jump between background and foreground techniques in the game. I like "straight" 2D fighting, like SF or SS series. Don't fight like sissy. I've never played RB therefore I can't make any comment.

Real Bout Special was my favorite simply because it was fun... I never played Real Bout 1, but between Special and 2 I will pick Special everytime simply because it is a funny game that never takes itself to seriously, but has a lot of depth... a lot of that great humor dissapeared in 2... Just my thoughts

For the old school fighters, Fatal Fury Special is the best of them. Sure it had no storyline, but it was just a great game, plenty of fun and set in a time of the series I most loved. Plus there was that secret match against Ryo Sakazaki, along with the old plane shifting system.

To Master Terry Bogard, Geese Howard did not die in Real Bout Fatal Fury. He saved himself before making impact and since Billy Kane failed to carry out Geese's plans the previous year, Geese himself took up the invitation to The King of Fighters '96 tournament, which continues the storyline.

Well that is interesting! I was under the assumption that Fatal Fury 1,2,Special, and 3 were all 2D games w/o the shifting mechanism and that Real Bout series is what started the shifting mechanism?

Curious!

1--RBFFS the BEST
2--RBFF2 newer and a lot of fighters to choose
3--RBFF What FF should be back in 91
4--FFS No story line but big fun
5--FF3 Great graphics
6--FF both players kicking Geese but at same time
7--FF2 same as FFS but few fighters to choose

The plane shifting began back in Fatal Fury, but one could only "follow" the opponent into the other plane, that is, you could not change planes whenever desired, only after the enemy had. They fixed that aspect of it in Fatal Fury 2, which is the way it continued, eventually with 3 planes, until SNK finally did away with the system.

Well, between Fatal Fury and Fatal Fury 3, I'd say Fatal Fury Special is the best in the series. Of all FF/RB/Garou games out there, Real Bout 2 is the best one, IMO

I am reading this post late, as I have been gone for a few days celebrating the new year. But, I was happy to see Fatal Fury Special as the title of one of the posts. This was the definitive game that made me get a Neo-Geo in the first place. After playing this game in the basement of an ice-skating rink place I came across an MVS machine. Fatal Fury Special was installed and I played it. I loved it from the word go. I also like Real Bout series, but FF Special is the best SNK old-school fighter out there IMO.

Neo Bomberman, you are right. In KOF Series (and in KOF Manga comics, everybody comes back alive in that comic, like Yashiro, Vice, and Mature), Geese Howard is indeed alive.

I am refering to the FF, or to be more precise, MOTW series? line. In the beginning of MOTW intro (from RB), you see Geese Howard refusing Terry's help, and fall from his tower. Then you see Terry (being remorseful), raise Geeses's son, Rock, by himself.

In MOTW, there is plenty of remarks that Geese had died, and you hear from Kain (the final boss), that Geese Howard is indeed dead, by Terry's hand.

Also, on side note, in Real Bout,DM for PS, you see a "halo" (since he died

) around Geese's head, in chr selection.

I know, it's confusing when Mark of the Wolves comes into play, since Geese on all accounts is dead, so I figured Terry and Geese must have had another fight, not really a part of any video game, where he dies. But then, and I'm less familiar with the RB series, is not Terry shown raising some child in his endings or something in the Real Bout series? I have heard as such, and we all know who that would have to be, as well as what explanation that entails, all of which serves only to contradict the rest of it all. The SNK Resurrection Factory caused too many problems of that order if you ask me. Perhaps I'm missing something, maybe we're just supposed to "go with it" and not ask questions? That's what I end up doing.

Yeah tell me about it. I think RB was when Geese actually died. Here's Terry's full ending from RB. After you beat him, you see a cut scene where Geese tries to do his raging storm. Terry counters it by using his powered up Power Geiser. Geese crashes out of the balcony, and is reaching with his hand for something to grab. Terry tries to save him by catching his hand, but then Geese removes Terry's hand, and falls from the tower laughing. That ending is exactly the same as one depicted in the beginning intro of the MOTW, so that fight must have been it--unless "some other fight" had exactly the same outcome, which is highly doubtful. After that scene from RB, you see Terry standing on the balcony being remorseful (that part is similar w/ Andy's ending as well, except that he uses his own super), and you see Terry fishing, playing basketball etc w/ a blond haired kid (Rock). I liked how MOTW nicely tied the loose ends with MOTW. RB Special, and RB 2, really didn't have a storyline, since Geese was already dead by then (though he was selectable as a playable chracter).

I haven't ever played much of RBFFS, but I wondered if it served as some sort of precursor to The King of Fighters '97. I'm just curious since Nightmare Geese makes his debut, and from that skin colour and the preceeding storyline, it made me wonder if that's what his quest for the orochi power did to him, much like how Rugal B. morphed into Omega Rugal once the siphoned orochi power within him became so great. Maybe it's a bit of storyline that doesn't count? I don't know.

I'd rate FFS fairly good. Mai can do the Musasabi No Mai in any stage rather than only her own, which fixes a key fault of FF2. This is the game that FF2 should have actually been in my opinion.

The 2-line fighting system is good to have for getting out of corners. It can result in some annoying cat-n-mouse games however. The character count is good- 15 playable characters, which made FF3 a letdown when that one came out with only 13 total characters (10 playable + Yamazaki & the Jin Brothers).

I'd say it is worth getting, even if you already have the RealBout FF titles. I was a bit disappointed by the RBS button layout (Punch, Kick, Strong Attack, and a Line Shift button). SNK should have left the line shift as A+B. At least FF3 kept the original key layout.

Neo Bomberman. I always thought that he had darker skin in the EX version, because he was already dead. But who knows?

Geese Howard died in RB, and came back in RBS as a ghost, but a special one...His skin is blue, he makes strange noises when dashing...is a JEDI!!!

Sorry for that, i hate me for beeing such a bad joker.

Seriously, i think that Geese died sometime after RB since KOF96 don't have a "real" story for the boss team, and all Geese appearences after RB (RBSDM on PS, RBS) show him with a dead skin.

Finaly, FFS was great when it came out, but now, Garou and RBS seems to me like the winners

See ya Neo Fans!

(i really enjoy those topics, who said fighting games have no scenario?)

I hadn't heard about the dark skin being as such since he's already dead though there is much I have yet to hear. But anyhow, in the King of Fighters storyline, Geese Howard is alive even after 1996, since he assembles the '97 Special Team. If we separate the KoF & FF storylines, then it all makes some more sense, though they are supposed to tie into each other as they do, from what I ascertain.

As I said before, Geese is still alive and kicking in the KOF Manga series--which follows the KOF storyline. In one of the issue, he is even talking and fighting w/ K!

He's dead as a doornail on the RB/MOTW though

fatal fury special is very exciting because it joins the best characters of three neo games(ff1,ff2 and art of fighting with a secret character); The gameplay is like ff2,wonderful.I bought it when it appeared and I was very pleased.moreover, there are lot of funny things(for example we can see kim flying in the background of a stage).
