If any of you are sitting on the fence with this title, have no fear. It's a solid game with the open-endedness of GTA mixed with lots of run and gun action, and a side of "blowing shit up". You can steal and drive any vehicle you see, approach missions with either stealth or action, call in support and air strikes, and command allied troops in battle.

It looks pretty good too, though I'm playing the PS2 version and I'm sure the Xbox version is a lot cleaner graphically. It's a lot of fun, don't neglect it just because Resident Evil 4 also came out today.

I love the tv ad.

"Blow shit up"

"Blow even more shit up"

"Blow shit up some more"

...maybe not an exact quote, but it was something along those lines.

Mercenaries ad = teh funnay = rofls'

Merc, you must know about this game. It's got AK-47 assault rifles, RPK light machine guns, and RPG's, and the free-form approach to missions that I think you were looking for in Freedom Fighters.

Yeah I've been following progress on the game for awhile now, I didn't know it had been released though. I'll have to pick it up, though right now I'm in the process of having Postal Inspectors wage my war against a family who's been opening my mail, fowarded to them for some odd reason and they knowingly opened something not meant for them. I don't much care to see them take a fall or go to jail, but rather I want my games they have. Otherwise the boys from Houston are going to nail their ass to the wall.

Better than RE4? I think so!

A friend of mine turned me onto this game. It's one of those surprises that came out of nowhere. It definitely looks like a major sleeper hit.

Not that RE4 doesn't deserve the money, it certainly does; but this one may just be one that demands anybody, with the means, to check it out. Hopefully, people will have room and time to try this one, too.

The commercials are quite funny. The most humorous since the Illbleed commercials, IMO. Simple, to the point, and well put together.

"Blow up anything."

"Blow it up again."

"Keep blowing stuff up."

"Blow the ever living c#&* out of it."

"Blow the ever living c#*( out of it, some more."

Still, my favorite one liner comes from the other commercial. Where the characters pledge their *ahem* honorable duties to what they will do, in the unit.

"I will use TWO grenades!.........Where one would do just fine."

Picking it up soon, demo was great.

Watch out for heavy minigun rains and scattered rocket showers.

What are those R-Zone carts? Is that some Tiger-handheld-like Panzer Dragoon game? If so, where did you get it?

It is. They don't take very long at all before you start blowing stuff up, either. And boy is it satisfying to do so. What's funny is that I now know where the difficulty of the game lies. Not that I'm saying it starts off difficult, but I kind of realized where you can truly hurt yourself. It's your wallet. You are given some good cash, but if you make too many wrong decisions, it'll cost you dearly. Things are expensive, and you have many decisions to make on what ordinance is best for you and at the time. Choose poorly, and you'll waste a lot of money (and actually come out of missions with less than you started with); choose wisely, and you make money.

This becomes more apparent when you face various structures and vehicles that require a certain level of ordinance in order to punch through the armor, etc. (eg. If you got a light machine gun, don't even think you'll level a building with it, or even penetrate most large armored vehicles). This can leave you in a situation where you may have to abandon a mission because you lack the money and resources to finish an objective. Then you would have to find a mission, that you can complete, to get money back again. This hasn't happened to me, yet; but already once, it almost did happen.

The destruction is of MechAssault 2 levels, but certain places do tend to rebuild over time. What does change is how the theatre of war changes. So, the building might be rebuilt, but if you originally blew up the building while doing a job for a certain faction (like removing the original occupants); you may see that the place is now occupied by that faction.

There's various groups fighting and attacking each other while you do your thing. It's up to you who you help or do you just ignore it? Just be warned. If you are on the ground, and you start to see mad unfriendly air support fly or drop in, you might want to vacate the area. You might be able to call in carpet bombs and mortars, but so can they. I'm not sure they can do it as randomly as you do. Normally if things are raining from above, you can find the source of it.

Sorry to bump an ancient thread (sheesh it was last posted in 5 whole days ago, which puts many pages down in the forums), but Mercenaries is on sale at Circuit City and CompUSA this week for $39.99, nice break on a very new game! :)

I've been playing this game almost exclusively the last three days or so (mainly because I injured my back and dont wanna bend down to take it out lol), but its damned good.

At first it seemed like anothe ho-hum son of GTA, but warring with the various factions, monitoring the dough, and the numberous ways to blow shit up and tackle missions made it a great experience.

I love packing a ride full of soldiers, driving up to an enemy stronghold, and having us all hop up and blast the joint up. The troops provide a nice hand sometimes.
