I got stock on the game on Saturday at my store (only 12 pieces) and all but one I've put aside for customer pre-orders.

I started playing the game that night and 8 hrs in so far I can tell you without hesitation that IGN's 9.8 score is so far right on the money.

I've beaten the second boss so far and both boss battles are nothing like you've seen in this series so far. Even the quicktime events are a welcome addition (a la Shenmue).

The level of detail in the game is simply astounding. How Capcom is possibly going to port this game on PS2 as is simply beyond me. the PS2 will have a heart attack trying to process everything. Nothing on any console looks better than this and as good is still debateable.

The camera is wonderful and the ability to target manually is incredible. Using the different weapons, especially the sniper rifle, is so much more gratifying than the old way. Although RE4 is very different than the older one's, it still feels like Resident Evil. It scares you more because the villagers are much smarter and you can't see behind you because of the camera.

So far the storying line is a little hokey, especially the reason for Leon being in Spain (to rescue the president's daughter? very 80s) but it still makes you more curious as to how it progresses since it's a complete departure from Umbrella.

I can't stress how well done the cutscenes are and even the voice acting. Not Metal Gear quality but at least as good as anything else.

So far, I'd say it's a little more difficult than the average RE fan is used to, mainly due to the enemy AI and that they come to you in far greater numbers, circling you to get the advantage. Regardless, it's still not very difficult but feels much better than the previous entries.

All in all, no RE fan can possibly be disappointed with this game as so far the hype machine still doesn't give it enough credit.

Even Gamespot gave the game a 9.6. I figured they would be the ones to give it a lower score.

I have been looking forward to this game for almost a year now, if you only count the time the new RE engine has been revealed. I've actually been looking forward to a new RE game since RE0. Only a day or two more now...

I do have one question though. Is ammo abundant through out the game so far?

Ammo is VERY abundant in the game for two reasons: 1) It takes more bullets than before to put down your enemies, even shotgum blasts and secondly, a new system to the game is most enemies leave items for you when you kill them (ammo, health or money).

Money is great since you don't find weapons anymore, you buy them from the "merchant", a strange fellow how appears at different points on the map, sort of like the typewriter save points. A very cool idea.

From what I understand you can actually kill the merchents accidentally (or on purpose I suppose) so watch those trigger fingers when one is around.

This is true as I did this just as I put the controller down to see what would happen. You know when you can shoot something when you aim the laser sight at something and notice that it creates a dot on it. If the laser passes through, then you can't shoot it.

Not in the least bit surprised that this game kicks ass.

Is there an ironsight view (a la MGS3) incorporated with the handguns and rifles, or did they just leave it as it was with the laser sighting? I've been wondering about this for quite a while.

Ironsight?

It uses a laser sighting method similar to Metal Gear but the view does not shift to first person, it simply zooms a little so you are closes to Leon.

Watch the review on gamespot. It seems they changed some stuff since the demo.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up. I found the laser sighting in the demo to be a little un-intuitive at first is all. No doubt I'll get used to it.

I can only speak from playing the demo about 100 times (I imported that game magazine from Japan a few months back that had it), but the aiming system is very easy to get used to after maybe an hour or so of playing. Probably only half an hour. My favorite thing to do with the handgun is pop them in the head, shoot a kneecap, then hit them in the head again. It becomes almost second nature eventually.

To be honest, there's nothing to get used to. Because of the camera angle, it would be impossible to aim you weapon without the laser sight but all you do is simply point and shoot wherever the sight lands on. The only question here is your ability to aim. Limb and head shots are quite simple actually, albeit when the villagers don't duck and dodge. If it wasn't for their movement, the game would be a walk in the park, really.

Shit, wait until you get to the boss battle with El Gigante. Aiming plays a big part on how to actually defeat him.

I'm not the biggest Resident Evil fan but this looks fun as shit. I guess I'll pick it up tomorrow.

This one was designed to be much more accessible for new comers to the series. Much more action oriented than the previous games. I think you'll enjoy it sweetie.

I want to see how this ends up looking on the PS2 (just out of curiosity)... it seems to me like they maxed out the Cube for this one. Unless they work some miracles on the PS2 equipment it seems like a shame to port it.

They better still have the chainsaw head slice in there ...

Anyway, yeah, that video makes it obvious that RE 4 is an incredible game. I'll be playing this one very shortly. Can't wait to start exploding those wonderful zombie heads again ...

When you see the game in action, you will know that no miracle can save a PS2 port unless they seriously scale back the insane amount of detail. The game throughs simply too much detail and effects at the same time that the PS2 would bog down to a chop-a-thon if it tried to run it.

I experienced a slight feeling of sluggishness with aiming at first, but after a few deaths I was popping heads just like old times. I just want to get to the level of proficiency I had in MGS3, which I definitely see happening. I did have a few headshots that didn't take the fuckers down however, that shit's annoying.

Trust me when I say that I found out the hard way that the head slice is still there. BTW, forget the pistol on that guy.

I'm waiting for Jedah Doma to complain about how it only runs at 30 fps.

Friday can't come soon enough for me.

I'm torn between starting this game up first, or Suikoden IV.

Oh well, I guess it's better than nothing for those with just a PS2.

EDIT: As you can see now that I've had a few beers I'm very chatty. Not even in a spammy way, I'm just a chatty little motherfucker.

I hope that my RE4 will arrive from Capcom
tomorrow which I pre-ordered last week.
I get a free T-shirt & an Art Book with my
pre-order.

The only pre-order I have to wait longer is
for my Resident Evil Outbreak File 2. :kekeke:

Did I do the right thing in pre-ordering RE4?. :kekeke:

Just so you get an idea, take the RE remake as an example if you've played it. Depending on if you think the PS2 can replicate that game exactly if it were ported, think that there is more detail to the characters and the enemies than in that game as well as the same level of detail to the backgrounds, bearing in mind that RE4 is fully 3D, not prerendered.
