I got stock on the game on Saturday at my store (only 12 pieces) and all but one I've put aside for customer pre-orders.
I started playing the game that night and 8 hrs in so far I can tell you without hesitation that IGN's 9.8 score is so far right on the money.
I've beaten the second boss so far and both boss battles are nothing like you've seen in this series so far. Even the quicktime events are a welcome addition (a la Shenmue).
The level of detail in the game is simply astounding. How Capcom is possibly going to port this game on PS2 as is simply beyond me. the PS2 will have a heart attack trying to process everything. Nothing on any console looks better than this and as good is still debateable.
The camera is wonderful and the ability to target manually is incredible. Using the different weapons, especially the sniper rifle, is so much more gratifying than the old way. Although RE4 is very different than the older one's, it still feels like Resident Evil. It scares you more because the villagers are much smarter and you can't see behind you because of the camera.
So far the storying line is a little hokey, especially the reason for Leon being in Spain (to rescue the president's daughter? very 80s) but it still makes you more curious as to how it progresses since it's a complete departure from Umbrella.
I can't stress how well done the cutscenes are and even the voice acting. Not Metal Gear quality but at least as good as anything else.
So far, I'd say it's a little more difficult than the average RE fan is used to, mainly due to the enemy AI and that they come to you in far greater numbers, circling you to get the advantage. Regardless, it's still not very difficult but feels much better than the previous entries.
All in all, no RE fan can possibly be disappointed with this game as so far the hype machine still doesn't give it enough credit.
