most kids are there longer than when i went to h.s in australia. something like 8:30-3:30 or 4. then they have (something like 50+%) juku which is translated as "cram school" in english. basically it's extra private schooling to keep up (wtf??) and yeah they do have to go saturdays though it may not be every sat and it's not a full day iirc.

you must be joking mate...
when you are senior year - 3rd year in Junior High and High you get in class before 8AM for early morning class and stay till 10:40-11PM till evening class is over... we used to carry THREE lunch bags - one for breakie, one for lunch and 3rd one for dinner... and when you get home you study till 2AM and wake up at 4AM to do the same thing all over again... :mr_t:
now saying that being at 1st year things pretty excisting coz you don't have to worry about those heavy study load YET and as long as you don't get picked on by senpai you should be alright... :D

No wonder Japanese ppl are so freaky/deaky. If I had to do that much schooling I'd be sniffing dirty underwear, jacking off to porn, and doing other shit too... oh wait, I do that already.

Bottom line is... who the fuck would want to live there? I once remember someone saying Japan has the highest suicide rate of any nation, I can see why. Fuck that... "Ventura, Ventura.... Space a' People!"

Here in Spain I did, when I was 14-16 years old, 8:15-13:45 with a 30 minutes break, and had to go one afternoon 2 hours. In my pre-university course it was 1 hour more, 8:15-14:45 (no afternoon though) and it was a pain. I know I wouldn't survive in Japan, I guess that's why so many Japanese teenagers appoint on the internet suicide groups :oh_no:

I'm only visiting so I havent even scratched the surface of what this place is about, but something deep down inside me tells me that I might not want to find out what makes them tick.

beelzebubble has a wealth of knowledge about this place if he teaches here. Funny thing is do the rest of us want to know what really goes on here. I am curious, but I might not want to find out.

ick, Japan is like a living military. I bet even the 80 year olds need to beaten regularly with sticks just to make sure they feel a equal amount of pain.

whatever

but they have soiled panties vending machines at least. :kekeke:

Neverless, you seriously can't think that simpler:

"the have too hard of a school system thus the high suicide rate"

c'mon, you gotta be crazy to think anything that simple...

a psycho-sociological and cultural study would be more appropriate I guess.

I lived there in 89' and i went to school for a month (Sophomore). We went from 8-3:30 or 4 and my sister Makiko studied extra on Sat Mornings w/ a group of students. We actually biked for 2 miles thru the Burbs of Sendai (just above Tokyo) and then caught a Densha (about ground subway Train) to get to school. The bike ride was definitely invigorating. One of the really cool things i remember about getting outta school was a Coke Machine that dispensed 500 ml glass bottles for about 100 yen (just shy of a Dollar then). I'm a Pepsi man here but something in the formula of the Coke there and the warm weather made them taste like the best thing in the world (sorry for the memory rant).

i went to school in late 80s mate... :D

dunno how much changed since coz I haven't been to Japan that often in last ten years - about two dozen times really since mom moved to Sydney and then back to Osaka and then moved to Perth with my old man... I find Japan way too depressing and personally never can read out what my Japanese friends are thinking... you never sure in deep whether they are genuine, me being half-Japanese... :mr_t:

Eh....I would put it like (USA=Teh Inconsistant).

Like everything else the quality of the education varies wildly from state to state, sometimes even county to county, district to district. We lack national standards and some places (not NY) operate under almost non-existant state-wide standards. It's also as lax or as rigerous as the students want it given that there were honors or AP alternatives for just about any required class in HS. The minimum baseline requirements in our state are also pretty rigerious meaning we had little time for electives until Senior year, while I had friends in Georgia who had endless amounts of time to take any elective they wanted. My high school had maybe one or two drop-outs per year, versus say 40% in other regions of the country.

National standards would help overall, but it's useless in the form of an unfunded mandate. But it's really more of a case that a certian unnamed region (once you average out the south+inner cities we're at educational parity with Europe) of the country drags us down in the international rankings, rather than any realistic difference in the educational quality we experienced versus the ones found in other first world countries that aren't so prone to regionalism and have nationalized school system.

Sorry Scanberg, but I just found this statement to be really funny. :kekeke:

I do agree entirely with your post though. School here is what you make of it. And as a country that claims to stress freedom and self-motivation, I think that's only fitting. If you want to take business math your senior year, and spend your time learning how to add different dollar amounts, that's your business.

When i was in High school in france (about 10 years ago) my schedule was like 8:00-12:00 13:00-16:00 on monday wednesday and friday, 8:00-12:00 14:00-17:00 on tuesday and thursday, 8h00-12:00 on saturday with 10 minutes break at 10:00 and 10 minutes break at 16:00.

we had a lot of things going during the day... but not a lot of homework necessary (something like half an hour a day of exercises, leaving plenty of console playtime :P)

I fail to see the humor..but my post didnt mean that the disparity in funding for inner city schools is fair and nor that a few federal funding guidelines wouldn't be an inherently good idea as it would force states in the south to improve their overall quality. I was merely stating it is what it is. We don't have a national, standardized, educational system, we have state-wide systems where every aspect of educational life varies. The myth of the "horrible" american school system, is just that, a myth as we don't have one. What we have is several failing school systems in the south and out west that need to be totally overhauled. While other areas of the country have amazing school systems be it on a state, county-wide, or local basis.

Your post said that the standards for your high school were quite rigerious, i.e. you misspelled rigorous in the same sentence where you explained how rigorous your state's standards were.

Anyway, just being an online grammar policeman. :kekeke:
