Sorry- I am not gonna let this go without ranting.
I am sick and fucking tired of people in the media and online speaking with some sort of self-indulgent reverence for the 'Tsunami victims'. In California it's been raining for 3 fucking weeks straight and I am listening to the radio in my car and an afternoon comedy talk DJ starts going off on 'We have no IDEA how lucky we are to have only this rain' and 'We should be ashamed of ourselves for even being annoyed or inconvenienced by this rain!' This stupid motherfuck is a radio comedian- and a bad one at that- who makes fun of shit all day long! And now he get's to play pulpit-jockey for a day.
The tsunami devastation, the tsunami horror, the tsunami is greater than you could ever imagine. One of the defining moments of our time. Humanity is coming together in support of the victims of the greatest Human tragedy of our lifetimes. tsunami, tsunami TSUNAMI! Yay! Tsunami! "Hi I'm the moron Joe Liberman and I say we need an international tsunami warning system!"
No- the Tsunami is not greater than I can imagine. Nor is 150,000+ deaths. I seem to recall places where hundreds of thousands have been massacred by other HUMANS. Why do we not wax deific and mewling-teared over Rwandan genocide? Did our nation stand up and cry? No.
Here's my theory- Americans- and especially the US media- are so fucking conflicted and guilt ridden over Iraq (and the world's perception of us) that they have opportunistically made this 'Tsunami thing' their own. Oh look how good we are! We give aid and support and our prayers- and "Oh god I want to gouge out my own eyes! For seeing is too great a priveledge in these post-tsunami horror days!"
Shut the fuck up. The tsunami is nature. It is out of our control. It can't be blamed- and it cannot take responsibility- so therefore it's perfect! A perfect opportunity for people to make of it whatever their damaged national psyche's want.
How's about instead of acting like morons we start looking at world statistics and world reality and then make HARD choices that involve more gray areas than Ian McKellen's chest hair, ok?
It IS a tragedy- but there's alot worse tragedies- too bad the rest are hard to wrap your brain around- difficult to package and cry and tear up over. Hard to give some cash to and then forget about. Just because a hundred and a half thousand die in ONE PLACE doesn't make it more tragic than the same amount dying in different parts of the world by other Humans.
