Saturn Virtua Stick Revived For PC
Another retro controller goes USB in Japan.
By David Smith
After scoring a surprise hit with its USB revival of the second-generation Saturn pad earlier this year, Sega today announced plans for another Saturn-to-PC controller conversion. The Sega Saturn Virtua Stick, an arcade stick originally designed for use with Sega's 32-bit console, will see release in Windows- and Macintosh-compatible USB form in Japan early next year.
The USB Virtua Stick is due for release on January 27, although Sega will begin accepting online pre-orders for the stick today. It will be priced at 7,329 yen (about $70).
Familiar to anyone who was serious about Virtua Fighter 2 on a console, the Virtua Stick features Japanese-style convex buttons and an eight-way microswitch gumball joystick. A similar design was employed for Sega's Dreamcast arcade stick a few years later. Eight face buttons are arranged to provide a handy layout for many styles of fighting game, employing from three to six buttons, although it looks like it would work well for almost any arcade revival
