Extremely Critical IE6/SP2 Exploit Found

Posted by timothy on Sunday January 09, @05:18AM
from the but-don't-worry-they're-on-it dept.
Spad writes "Secunia is reporting on three vulnerabilities in IE6 running on XP SP2. Any of these, in combination with an inappropriate behaviour where the ActiveX Data Object (ADO) model can write arbitrary files, can be exploited to compromise a user's system. Moreover, the vulnerability can be used to delete files from the user's system. Secunia says 'Solution: Use another product.'"

Why people still use IE I will never know. Especially when Mozilla/Firefox builds are FREE and very quick to download.
Bah.

Bah.

Honestly, even if they weren't, I'd rather pay for opera than get my system hijacked whenever I looked at a porn site.

IE is trash, but I still keep it on my system for any site Firefox doesn't render correctly. What I hate are the people who use rediculous browser addons like Crazy Browers in an attempt to improve IE, sure you can add features but if the core of the browser is vulnurable and rotten, no add-on is going to change that.

tabbed browsing, built in popup blocker, no spyware threats, ps don't install flash.

*if you feel like playing a flash game just open it in ie.

your browsing experience will be clean and amazing.

I haven't used IE in a really long time. I always felt firefox looked nicer and was a little faster.

The old system admin. at my dept. used to refer to IE as "exploder". :kekeke:

Anyway, the dangers of explorer are numerous and well documented, and I can count on one hand the number of times when I had to use IE because something wouldn't work in Firefox.

Also, if you're going to switch to a different browser, you may as well switch from using outlook express as well. It also has tons of vulnerabilities and frankly, has no real advantage over thunderbird. The transition is really painless, and you probably won't even notice the difference after a week or two.

I use both firefox -and- good ol' Mozilla, and I find that chat works fine in Mozilla. Both are free and quick to download, so if you want to run chat in a decent browser get yourself one of the Mozilla builds.

Great, now that every Tim, Dick and Harry is using FireFox, it'll only take a year before every exploit in that is found and something else becomes the most secure browser. :annoyed:

Back when everyone was using Netscape, we didn't get this level of exploitation. No doubt there'll be exploits, but nothing compared to IE's vulnerabilities.

Besides, perhaps it would be good if 95% of the web wasn't using the exact same (bad) browser.

There's also Opera, and other Mozilla based browsers that can be adopted.
