Right, I'm thinking of getting a panasonic Q. What I would need to do is convert a NTSC s-video signal into a phono/scart PAL one (yes I know you use quailitiy but this is the way it has to be).

I'm not sure the best of doing this, I think the following will work but it is very complicated, any simpilar method?

Use a s-video to scart adapter
Use scart to phono adapter
Use PAL booster (only as a phono input)
Use phono to tv set.

I can't find a s-video to phono, or am I missing the gun totally and you know of a better way?

thanks

Why do you want to convert the signal to PAL?
Any TV that's not too old should take NTSC signals, and if your TV doesn't, it's about time you get a new TV anyway. Easier than having to always worry about NTSC outputs.
S-video to phono or scart converters are available everywhere.

Like all TV's from about the early '90s have both PAL and NTSC support.

If I recall from having mine ages ago,as well as the s-vhs socket the Q still has the red/white/yellow composite phono plugs on the back,So all you need is to make sure that your TV is capable of displaying an NTSC picture in colour. The Q comes with a composite a/v vid/left/right cable as standard.

Until I can find the scart mod check this:

http://www.geocities.co.jp/Technopolis-Mars/9984/ngcrgb_e.htm

Edit: This is the site but it seems to be offline at the moment.

http://www.rgbcube.co.uk/

These are mods to the component/d-terminal cable to get you a rgb signal. The d-terminal cable is easier to mod as it already has the two wires for horizontal and vertical sync running through it.

I highly recommend this mod as it gives superb image quality. Make sure you don't run the vga mod on lcd monitors because they display vertical bars for some reason.

The thing is I do have a large 2 year old Bush 28'' TV that when I use composite with my NTSC neo geo / gamecube it gives me black and white :(

only way I could get my neo in colour was using a RGB scart

someone please explain to a total n00b if I got a s-video to scart adapter that would work? Are all scart cables RGB?

Doesn't a Q output RGB???

T

No.The cube part and the dvd parts are seperate entities in the same casing. In the bottom of the casing of the Q is actually a complete cube mobo including its heat sink and all the dvd gubbins are crammed in on top of it.

The cube part can be made to output rgb if you get one of the correctly modified component cables.

http://image.lik-sang.com/images//large/panasonic-gamecube4.jpg

As you can see in this pic,in the middle of the rear of the Q is the digital component output. If you have a tv that has component in then you are ok.In the Uk to play games to its maximum potential we use a modified component lead that take the ends of the lead off and then has the wires plumbed into a scart plug, with an extra wire looping out and going into the yellow video socket as a sync line. But for watching dvd's you can only use the s-vhs socket.

Next to the yellow video socket is the s-vhs port.(I can't recall what the ones above and below the s-vhs are offhand, but isnt one for adding a sub and the other is optical for hooking upto a dvd player or stereo for maximum sound quality)

No matter what method you use(apart from optical),you have to use the red/white phono's to get your sound. As I recall they are both outs so you can have one set going to your tv and the other to your stereo.

Dunno if this helps at all, buit the reason that I sold my Q is that my standalone dvd player gives me a far superior picture than what I ever got out of the Q.Plus the whole rats nest of wires hanging out of the back was a mess and so it just ended up not being used and just ended up as a dust magnet and so was sold on.

if you got one of those scart adaptors with the s-vhs socket on the back you will still have it running in B&W as your set seems like its only capable of displaying NTSC 4.44 (PAL 60) and not 'true' NTSC 3.58.

RGB isn't tied by the strictures of PAL/NTSC and is in effect turning your TV into a monitor(although with it being a PAL set you do have 625 lines so your definition is slightly enhanced)

You could get an NTSC>PAL converter for about £25 but they ones that I have seen only output in ordinary composite. So for watching dvd's you will have the same quality as a standard ps2.But you could get hold of a converted component/rgb still to play your cube games on.

Thanks, but my problem is that the s video signal displays black and white on my tv, so what I'm asking is can I externally adapt it to RGB scart which would work?

So you want to take the S-Video output from the Qube and convert it to a RGB scart input to your TV....

No that cannot be done...my advice would be to throw the Bush TV out the window and buy a proper TV for example a Sony Wega ........ :) :)

fuck, okay then I'll take the s video, put in into composite and then use a ntsc to pal adapter and that would work on dvd's like what I think soopafamicom said? If so that's enough for me, thanks for everyone's help

HAHAHAHAH!! I love quotes like that.

My tv is a BUSH 28" widescreen with all kinds of inputs and it can play absolutely ANYTHING.It will even play an original jap famicom which are usually very hard to get working on a set in the UK.It is able of displaying both NTSC 4.44 and 3.58, and cost me £230 about 3 years ago.It has surround sound and all kinds of shit it can do.

I bet if my set was opened up it would have the same chassis as a Sony/Hitachi/Philips set that would have cost upwards of £600.

Names mean fuck all with tv's,there are only about 4 manufacturers who actually make the chassis' for tv's.Then they go to different parts of the plant and are given a different casing and badge. Most sets are made by companies like Thorn and Daewoo but the finished items are so different when they get to the shops in terms of price and looks

Yeah so go and buy a WEGA for £700 or look around and find its rebadged equivalent for less than half that.

Pre-Modded RGB cable for the Panasonic Q.

You can thank me and such.

The RCA plugs and the Digital port plug all feed into the SCART so that solves all of your issues right there.

Goldenshop is alright I ordered my GC VGA cable from them awhile ago and it works perfectly.

Yeah but that cable iss only for giving you the best picture from out of the cube side of it.The dvd only displays out of the s-vhs or composite phono's(what you call the RCA's)
