I'm at the point of selling/trading my DS for a PSP as I've completed all the games I wanted to see for it and I heard the DS version of Ridge Racer is a horid port of the N64 version. Am I making the right choice? Apart from graphics (dur) which game PLAYS better?

See my thread about the control in RRDS. It's not exactly intuitive. I can play RR with a D-Pad, I did it on the PSX with Ridge Racer and Ridge Racer Revolution, but somehow RR DS has horrible control. The powersliding is uncontrollable.

On top of that, the collision detection blows. Hitting an enemy will send you into the wall and down about 40mph immediately. I've been in the lead, had an opponent car smash me from behind, and then "warp" 30 feet in front of me.

It's a decent game, and the multiplayer is fun, but it's no Ridge Racers (PSP).

Both the DS version and the PSP version are fun, but Ridge Racers for PSP wins hands down.

What he said...

PSP Ridge Racers plays almost flawless.

But it shouldn't warrant a purchase of the system.

Especially for the price it demands.

< 3 months for the US, UK launch...

Nobody is 100% positive the JPN system will play US games...

Old School indeed.

That is exactly the way the cars handled in the first Ridge Racer.

And that use to piss me off to the extreme.

The PSP supports region locking for titles, which limits which software may be played on each region's hardware. They have announced in interviews that the system will adopt the DVD regional lockout scheme; Japanese PSP hardware already has a R2 logo on its box. However, support for regional lockout does not necessarily mean it will be used for all software.

According to Sony, games for the PSP will at first be encoded as region-free. There will be no limitation as to what country's model can play what country's version of the game. This will open up the "portability" of the handheld, as well as enable gamers who buy a PSP game on holiday to play it on their native PSP. There has been some confusion over this, however, as the Japanese releases of titles such as Ridge Racers carry a Region 2 logo. It is traditional for handheld games consoles to carry no region locks; for example, the Nintendo Game Boy lineage.

It is expected that movies for the PSP will be region-locked, much as DVDs are.

So, if the companies wan't to block out region1 PSP's they can.

As a note, Ridge Racer DS is a port, remake of RidgeRacer64, the psp version is a new game, and new games are better then port remakes.
Another point of interest, the second screen on RRDS looks hideous.

Well it has been said by Masa Chatani, Corporate Executive & CTO for SCE over at gamespot.com in a Video Interview. He said "It is region free for the games BUT it it's locked for UMD Movie and Audio Discs.

http://www.gamespot.com/psp/driving/ridgeracer/media.html?gcst=psp_hardware_devint.asx

You took the words straight out of my mouth....Masa did confirm that all games are region free so no matter where you are in the world games can be played from all regions....this is also a plus for imports, no mods needed and you get titles before they even come out in the US and UK which is basically the same we can say for the DS.

Masa Chatani also mentioned that the UMD will be used in other technology to come, he hopes it will replace media eventually....but personally I think this is has far as it will get, it will die quicker than the mini disk, but for the capacity of these UMD's it may work.

Movies on UMD will flop...but lets see what they release.

Feck, thanks for the warning I may wait until the UK launch now... hmm

I heard something about an external battery that clips onto the back of the PSP, is that out/coming out soon?

RR for the DS supports single cart multi-player play for up to six people. Although, you can only load one track at a time, you can set the number of laps ect.

DS RR is a joke compared to the PSP RR. PSP RR is a collection of pretty much all Ridge Racer tracks and cars from the series. I have both and playing the DS RR is just a pain.

If you get a PSP by no means sell your DS though. Around September the DS is gonna get HOT.
