I was wondering if any of you had your Neo games on a shelf and what did you do to prevent the yellowing?

I have a shelf with glass doors, but I'm not sure if that helps against the yellowing of the games...

Any help is appreciated.

Just make sure that you keep them away from sunlight - that's the most important thing. Also, try not to let them get exposed to too much humidity.

Games "YELLOW".........is he referring to the plastic sleeves? What all can happen to the carts? Just curious because the majority of my AES collection is at Moms house in my old room.

Whenever I hear about yellowing it is in terms of the candy cabs and not cartridges.

I guess any type of light could cause fading, but I doubt that a standard 75W bulb would have enough energy to fade the insert within a reasonable time frame. Sunlight generally has a much greater intensity, so it would fade/yellow inserts in a much shorter time frame. You can get a rough idea of the intensity by holding feeling an object which is positioned under the light - the more intense light source will generally cause heating. So storing home carts under a hamburger lamp is a bad idea ... ;).

the sun fades the inserts because of the UV spectrum, I don't think regular bulbs produce them.

It would be best just to send me your games, and I'll make sure they don't yellow!

Lights with high levels of UV rays cause the most fading. Your average light bulb contains very, very little UV light ( unless you light your house with high-pressure sodium bulbs :D )

It's probably a given, but of course if you smoke in your house that'll cause yellowing, on everything.

Very true! I store all my games in a cabinet that does not have any glass. Make sure your collection is out of direct sun light.

the only light that I know will cause fading over time is flourescent bulbs, because they emit similiar rays as the sun. That's how so many neo games sitting in stores in japan get sunfaded.

I keep most of my stuff in a closet and in drawers to be safe. I havent had a cart go sunfaded on me yet.

If you are careful with the old style boxes you can push the insert further down so the top is covered by the plastic sleeve. I have seen lots of inserts that got discoloured along the top of for that reason, and typically the top of the back cover. Of course smoke does nasty things as mentioned -I once saw a yellowing Waku Waku 7 insert.

I recommend you keep your games in boxes or plastic bins or so, anywhere shady. My collection actually sits under my bed and in the closet. Constantly displaying it is one of the worst things anyone can do if they are condition freaks.

Also, if you keep your games on a shelf, it might be a good idea too cover them with something. I've heard of collectors putting garbage bags over their shelf to protect their stuff from yelowing and fading. It sounds weird but its not a bad idea.

Placing games inside or even behind any kind of plastic bag can be a regrettable decision, especially individually wrapping them. Once temperatures rise the inside -or ared behind the shaded side of the bag when covering carts- will heat up even further and this can cause the insert and/or plastic sleeve to warp and bend.
