Is Metal Slug 5 any good?

I've seen a couple folks who really seem to like Metal Slug 5 and I was hoping to get some other opinions. I don't to start another "what's the best MS" thread, but was the 5th installment worth playing? I remember how amazed I was with Metal Slug 3 and how much of a disappointment #4 was. Did anything worth mentioning change in #5 that brought it closer to the glory of MS3?

P.S. Is there a quick explanation of MS2 vs MSX? I have MS2 for my CDZ and only played MSX a little in the arcades. They seemed almost exact, but I had limited time with MSX. Thanx

I haven't played 4, and am in no rush to.

I own MS1, MSX, MS3, and MS5.

Of the four, 3 is my STANDOUT favourite. Id' consider 5 on par with other good ones like 1, and X. It could approach 3, but it is obviously unfinished, with dangling storyline cutscenes that are started, but never returned to and finished. :shame:

It's worth having especially if you are an MVS gamer. If you are an AES gamer like me, it will NOT work with the Phantom-1, so you have to go AES.

IMO, the price of MS5 is only rising, as it's a Slug, and demand will likely continue to outstrip supply. If there is a *crash* and a pile of people leave the Neo, all bets are off. However, waiting for an AES Slug to get 'cheaper' could be a long pointless wait.

better than 4 but not as good as 3. Both 4&5 were very dissapointing imho, but they had a hard act to follow.

X is similar to 2 without the slowdown problems (which is a serious issue in #2) X was like a rehash, but somehow I still prefer to play MS2. Its hard to explain why though, maybe its because its the first one I got and it brings back fond memories.

Metal Slug 5 is between Metal Slug 3 and 4. It's not as good as 3, but, not as bad as 4. I'd recommend waiting for the Metal Slug 4 and 5 compliation to come onto the PS2, and buy it then, cuz the AES price tag is kinda steep.

I only hope that there is never a #6, lets please let the series bow out gracefully.
Should have stopped at #3 imho.

I'd rate 5 as middle of the road on Slug Street

If you like slug games, its really a must buy, esp if you like metal music. Slide move is very welcome, and the bosses are rather fun too. The past 6 months, its been my most played slug actually.

No, please do start one. You can never have too many threads about the best game series for the Neo.

First of all, MSX is the best Slug hands down. Now that we've got that out of the way, we can talk about the rest of the Slugs.

As far as MS5 is concerned, I'm somewhat conflicted. I love the fact that it has lots of new content, but it really doesn't FEEL like a Slug.

MS4 was a hack job, but it was a FUN hack job, with some great music IMO.

If you're a fan of the series, get MS5. If you are just looking to get A slug game, just get MSX, because, like I said before, its the best :D

I didn't like it.

mind you, i also think #3 totally sucks, and think #4 is the 2nd best after #1.

the music and vehicle chases in 4 totally raise the bar, even though the bosses blow and many of the backgrounds are cut and paste. but the gameplay, oh wow, what a rush.

I like MS 5, but with that said I also rate it to be the lowest game of the series. The first four slugs pretty much blow it away (MS 1 - MS 3), but I think MS 4 and MS 5 are pretty closely matched overall. The funny thing is that one of the major reasons why I don't like 5 is because of the music - it just seems out of place to me and takes away from the "Metal Slug feel".

In short, I still enjoy it - but it just seems to be missing a little of the gritty feel that the other slugs have. I'd still pick up the MVS version if I had it to do over again, but I probably wouldn't drop the cash that the AES version is going for.

i enjoyed 5.
never really got into 4.
but never played longer than lvl3
the music in 5 is pretty cool.
it seems different than a slug though.
with the new slug and all, the car level.
just varied.
the slide seems a little forced, but it's kind of neat.
it's fun to go through though.

MS5 is a GREAT game. Does it MS3 good? no and that's the problem. MS3 is an icon here, so every MS has to be compared with it and all fail (you'll notice the same with the KOF serie and KOF 98). So if you take the game in itself it's fun, it's hard, it's solid gameplay material, musics are AEWSOME and the animation is well made. What you need more?

the last stage of MS5 is by far the worst developed stage for a MS game, from the stupid car part to the retarded last boss, it sucks.

Metal Slug 5 (much like MS4) is one of those games that grows on you the more you play it. At first, I was a bit disappointed given the disjointed storyline and obvious missing elements. But, after replaying it a few times, I found myself getting into the classic run and gun MS gameplay (less on the multiple path BS that was in MS3). There's some great music in 5 (just as in 4) as well.

I will have to agree with you about the car stage. It was totally unnecessary. Since when did SNK throw in mandatory hits in a Slug game anyway?

I do like the boss though; mostly for the fact that it is different. The first part, where you have to have a machine gun to do any efficient damage on those elephant sides is pretty cheezy.

Come to think of it, mandatory hits are more common in 5 than all the other slugs.

I thought 5 was pretty damn good. I loved it until the end, where I just couldn't believe they would have such a lame/stupid/out of character boss that they did. The whole trip was great until that point.

Anyone else's cart make slight static noises on some explosions? No, it's not a boot and no, it's not all the time. But it does happen here and there. Anyone?

This is a well known software bug. It happens to everybody's AES game. Elevator crashing at bottom causes it, amongst other events.

I personally liked the game, especially the head banging Heavy Metal soundtrack... but the last boss just pissed me off to high hell. MS4 was worlds better IMO, and MS1 "The Original" is still my fave. I'd only recommend #3 if you want everything including the kitchen sink thrown at you. More bang for the buck. MS5 is marginally cool but not much else.

It happens to MVS carts as well. Pretty annoying, and really detracts from the overall polish of the game, IMO. They really should've caught this one during play testing.
