Disclaimer: I have no fucking clue how reliable this account is. It's from a forum post elsewhere.

I have some problems with my PSP. I have the black dirt in the plastic and some dead pixels. This problems makes my screen look pritty dirty with a white background on the screen. It looks like there is some dirt on the screen all the time and you can imagen how enoying that is...

On the japanese Sony homepage there is some informations saying that the black dirt in the plasitic is considerd normal. I also wrote them about my problems and this is the answer I got:

"Thank you for taking the time to write Sony Corporation.
Your inquiry has been forwarded to us at Sony Computer Entertainment
Japan (SCEJ) after being read by Sony Corporation due to the contents.
Please kindly note that, we would like a response on behalf of Sony
Corporation.

Liquid crystal display (LCD) of PSP is covered with polychromatic lid
and in order to protect the LCD, the surface of the lid is coated.

There may be a foreign substance looking structure inside the LCD,
but it is also caused by the product character of the lid.
It is not the failures from the manufacture.

The LCD is made with highly detailed technology.
Even though, it may have a missing pixel, or some red/ blue/ green dots
led all the time.
As it is on page 108 of the instructions manual, it is not a breakdown.
Please be free from care in using them.

If there are any scratches or fingerprints, please wipe it off with a
soft cloth.

Thank you in advance for your kind comprehension.

Sincerely Yours,

XXX XXXXXX

Information Center"

It certainly wouldn't be earth-shattering. Many companies do not consider a single-dead pixel to make a defective unit. In fact, Nintendo's dead pixel policy is unusual in that a single dead pixel is returnable (within a year at that)

Well, for the DS you can return the system to nintendo whowill replace it for free. That is actually something you can do :)

For the PSP ... well... no dead pixels or unremovable dust policy, that is not a hardware failure for them as i see it now (you can still produce a hardware failure to make them replace your whole unit though). that sucks big big times

Dear Sir,

Please this is normal manufacturing due to very high technicity of our product. Please wipe screen with a soft cloth before you play.

The PSP's screen is made be Sharp, who also makes the DS's screens. (The PSP possibly has a higher rate of dead pixels, but a PSP screen also uses more pixels, so among the PSP's faults the dead pixel one isn't necessarily an OMFG SONY SUX thing.)

However, Nintendo has a dead pixel policy stating it wil replace a unit for one dead pixel.

Hence, this thred is a matter of policy.

the problem with dead pixels on portables is that the screens are so tiny, theyre more noticeable

my desktop's lcd has 2 dead pixels, but since theres 1,310,720 pixels total, i dont even notice them unless i look.

i forgot what the point of this post was

eh

my turbo express has like 4 dead pixels, but it doesnt bother me

'dust' looking obstructions would however.

If you ask me the "built in" dust is just Inexcusable. Imagine buying a cell phone or a watch with bits of dust inside the face. Thats bullshit.
The dead pixel issue is not really a big deal. All mass produced lcds will have some with dead pixels.
