I've got another project AES, I'm going to try to fix. I'm so flushed with my last success, let's see if I can do another.
At the very least, I will likely learn more about how the AES works.
I have an 011xxx serialled Neo AES, with a NEO - AES board (early version, BIOS on top), and it has no sound. It has never been modded. There is perfect visuals and game play, but silence instead of sound (no crackling, no quiet sound). The solder joints at the AV out are secure. There is also no sound from the headphone jack. I've also thoroughly cleaned the cart slot. No Sound. Period.
So, that rules out the easy stuff. The headphone jack gets no signal, so the problem is far earlier than at the output part of the circuit.
Is the Yamaha IC the sound processing IC? If it is, I've checked all of it's solder joints, and it's secure, though I haven't gone trace following yet. I'd like to make sure that it actually is the sound IC before I take things that far.
Is it possible that it's a cart slot trace (or traces)? I've had dirty carts play soundless on my personal AES. Are there specific numbered cart slot contacts that deal specifically with sound addressed memory? If so, bear in mind there is no sound at all, not voice only, or music only. Nothing at all.
Parts are not a problem for this project. I already have another hatched NEO AES board, that has a trashed cart slot, and has already donated it's video amp board to another AES. (this hatched board *did* have sound back when it worked).
So before I go swapping components willy nilly, I'd like to have a bit more info about the Neo sound circuit. What should I be checking? Am I looking at the right IC? Where are the caps that are in the sound amp circuit, or how would I locate them myself? If it comes down to it, I could swap out the sound chip itself, with a known working. I just don't want to try anything that invasive, until I have a better idea about what I am working with.
I know I often ask hard technical stuff, but I really love the Neo, and it's a total rush to bring a dead one back. I like that I learn so much more about it as I go too. Any ideas, pointers and advice from those more experienced than I is respectfully appreciated. I know I could send this to the master JMKurtz, and he could no doubt fix it. What I really want out of this is to learn more about the Neo sound circuit, and sound circuits in general. Sussing this out myself (hopefully with help from some of you) will help me do that.
