I finally got a Ram cart for my Japanese Sega Saturn to play Metal Slug and it still didn't work. I bought a 4 mb Game Shark Ram cart. The system read the cart but still wouldn't play. What's the deal? I bought this game 5 months ago and still haven't played it! :blow_top:

I believe the game came as a box set with a 1MB RAM cart but also as just a CD. I know I've played the game with my 4-in-1 and it worked. I've never heard of a Game Shark 4MB RAM cart but prehaps another member here has one and can help you out.

I'm pretty sure the Game Shark is just a 4meg back up memory cart and it won't function as a RAM cart for the Capcom or SNK games. I'd get a Pro Action Replay which works with the majority of the Saturn games that use a RAM cart.

I have a US Black Sega Saturn System with a
4 in 1 cart which let's you play imports, 4MB ram
cart, game cheats & memory card saves.
My games work great! with it too. :)

Pro Action Replay 4 in 1 cart convertor is what
you want to get. ;) I saw one Brand New for
about $30.00 on ebay. You should grab one soon.

You need a 1MB ram cart, not 4MB for SNK games on Saturn. A standard 4MB ram cart will not work on all the games that require a 1MB cart...although it will with a few. As others here have stated its best to get a pro action replay 4-in-1 cart. They function as both a 1MB and 4MB ram cart, in addition to a memory back-up and cheat code device.

I can second this. I have a gray JPN Saturn, and I've got the 4MB cart that came with Vampire Savior for some Capcom games (please don't flame me), and KOF96 works... but only to a certain degree. Sprites will be missing every now and then if you attempt to use the 4MB cart... but I haven' t found any pattern to when they are missing and when they aren't. Some rounds, the sprites will all load fine, but others, there will be some frames of animation missing.

I haven't tried the game without the 4MB cart in, but I suspect it won't boot at all.

this is very off topic....but she is Ayumi Hamasaki and I doubt very seriously that she modeled anyone's face in res evil 0.

Now back to the topic at hand, I tried my copy of Metal Slug on Saturn with the 4MB ram cart to be 100% sure, and it DOES work! I am using a modded US saturn model 2 with an offical Sega Japanese 4MB ram cart. So in theory Metal Slug should work just fine with a 4MB ram cart..why it doesn't with yours...prehaps you mistook a 4MB memory back up cart for a ram cart..thats my best guess, either that or your ram cart is dead.

Some models of Saturn are incompatible with Metal Slug. The Skeleton, for example, will not play Metal Slug at all. Just a black screen after it starts to boot.

Agreed this is only converter you will ever need.

It's worth pointing out that non-Sega carts are DEATH for Saturn cart ports. The edge of the PCB is square, not tapered, and this seems to cause the pins to space out and not contact properly, ruining the port. If you absolutely have to use one don't remove it once it's in there.

Sucks for my system, I can't close the screen with a cart inserted so I have to pull it out to close it up. Sega-official parts only for me!

The game comes with a Rom cart, not a Ram cart. The difference is the Rom cart has part of the games programming on it, which is why it is required for the game to run. Although the 4 in 1 is nice, you cant use it to play games like Metal Slug and KOF 95 on the Saturn. You could mod your saturn so that it reads Japanese games without the use of the 4 in 1, and then that way you can play the Rom cart games on it perfectly. Thats what I had to do with mine. Hope this helps ;)

Sorry, I should have specified. It doesn't work with the black Skeleton Saturn. Not sure if it applies to ALL black skels, but when I had trouble someone told me the trouble was 'cause of the Skeleton. Sure enough it worked on the other models.

This is incorrect. I use the same 4MB sega liscensed JPN ram cart for all my Neo games on my model 2 US saturn. And they all work except for KOF 95, which uses ONLY the cart it came with. So you were partially correct...KOF 95 is the one that has to have the cart it came with though....not Metal Slug. Also I have a 4-in-1 which ALSO works just fine with all Neo game ports on the Saturn EXCEPT for KOF 95.

This is a fact as I have tested and tried it all on my Saturn b4 posting this.

So...in short any Neo port on the Saturn EXCEPT for KOF 95 will play with a 4-in-1 or an officially liscensed 4MB ram cart. This Is what I have confirmed.

Metal slug comes with a ram cart (1mb).

Most versions of Metal slug were standalone CD and didnt come with a cart at all.

If it were a ROM cart, none of those people would have been able to play it :kekeke:

I've got a modded US Saturn and Metal Slug works fine with the official 4mb card that came bundled with X-Men VS Street Fighter.

That same cart turns the 2p sprites in KoF '96 and both Samurai Spirits into garbage. My 4-in-1 does the same exact thing, but it's one of the original models that doesn't work correctly with Vampire Savior. Maybe some of the later models that had the newer 4mb compatibility updated also fixed the 1mb bugs.

This is true, but once you have a 4-in-1 inserted into your system there's little reason to ever remove it. 0_o.

Now, see, when I said I couldn't close the screen with a cart installed I meant that closing the screen was desirable. Keeps the dust off the LCD. Your idea is nice but isn't really, IMHO, a good tradeoff against a dusty LCD.

Nah, even the later Action Replays had bugs, but I hear they are usually fixed by resetting the game. I wouldn't know about that myself because I have and older model that I personally modded and there are no glitches whatsoever! :buttrock:

Either you need a 1MB, 4MB, or a pro action replay 4 in 1 cart from www.ncsx.com. And yes Metal Slug will work with a 4MB cart, it actually runs it better than a 1MB cart.
