I just bought a Cotton Boomerang cart off of eBay and upon receiving the cart noticed the cart label (both top and front) appear to be print outs. They are slightly fuzzy and unlike real ST-V labels are glued on as opposed to stickers.

I don't have the proper security bit to remove the screws, but I'm wondering if anyone else has come across ST-V carts with fake labels. Ultimately I can only think of two situations that would happen:

1) Labels were damaged and replaced

2) Bootleg

I don't have a digital camera so I can't provide pics and as I said can't open the cart.....anyone else own a cotton boomerang out there?

Hi Rev..

I've never heard of or seen a ST-V Bootleg..Very interesting.

But,I think it's very much possible..

Labels were damaged and replaced :...is also a possibility though I've never seen nor came across that either.

I don't own this game yet...

I have the bit to open them......though you could use the melted pen tip method or a pair of needle nose plies if you like to try and get it open.

"I'd" love to see what the inside of this cart looks like...

Here's the set I bought....It's paid for itself time and time again..
Nintendo NES Security Tool game BIT 3.8 & 4.5 MM

I got it from this place.

He sells the Bits seperatly..
You need the 4.5mm Bit

Though they sell the bits seperatly I can't find any on EBay..

Note:In this set the bits are hidden in the top of the driver...

I guess I'll pop this cart open in a week or so.

You should get the 4 in 1 cart.

How the heck are you going use a 4 in 1 cart with a ST-V board?

I've came across a few suspicious looking ST-V carts over the years, but I've never opened them to examine them.

That sucks either way - what does the seller have to say about it?

its possible the cart casing was damaged or broken and they just pieced it back together with another case with a crappy fake label. ?

I haven't contacted the seller yet, but by the looks of the cart it came from a HK distributor like Cosmico or the like.

The cart does work, and I'm sure he'd take it back, but if it's real i want to keep it.

Bit of a conundrum without the ability to open the cart up.

Certainly possible.

I've seen a ton of legit MVS games that were in cases that were not their own (Neo Print stuff)

Kaedesblade indicated that he receivedthe same cart from the seller and upon opening it it had all mask roms.

Okay, Just opened my Cotton Boomerang cart and it contains.

Seven mask roms plus a label 838-11588-121 on the pcb itself.

Compared against Decathlete cart.

Five mask roms, One eprom and pcb label 837-11587-15.

On Sega stuff most of the ROM's will have markings with MPR, EPR, or OPR then a series of 5-6 numbers designating it's Sega part number. Those are official chips.

For example, Decathlete has:
EPR18967
MPR18968
MPR18969
MPR18970
MPR18971
MPR19872

Cotton Boomerang:
MPR21069
MPR21070
MPR21071
MPR21072
MPR21073
MPR21074
MPR21075

Well popped mine open today as well. Just received the proper bits (thanks Chris1 for the eBay link) and it contains machine soldered mask roms.

Just a fake label...which I can live with :)
