I have the greatest idea for a DS game!

No, seriously, I do.

This stemmed from Loopz's thread on Y's for PSP. RPG's would be absolutely friggin perfect on the DS, and they could actually USE the touch screen in a meaningful way.

So lets start easy, you're playing the game and you have a scenario unfolding. How's about text going on in one screen with the game graphics unfolding in the other? Might be hokey but it could work.

Lets move it up a bit, hows about an integrated menu system? Battles take place on the top screen and the menu's are on the bottom, BUT here's the good part. You use the stylus to select your stuff in the menu! It'd be so much faster and easier.

But that's nothing all that exciting, I mean it's cool, but nothing huge.

Then we move on. You select your spell, say Fire 2, then the screen switches from the menu to a mirror of the top screen with the enemies laid out, you select the epicenter of your spell and who it will target! Or you could just like circle them to select it. Same goes with healling spells, so you could heal the 2 party members who need it with a more juiced up Cure spell instead of a weaker version that would heall all 4 party members! Very cool, IMO.

Then we could go even further, though this part I kind of steal from a the Square N64 Final Fantasy Prototype game. After you selecting the spell option and who you want it to hit, instead of clicking on "fire 2" or "ice 3" you actually have to draw a symbol or pattern to get a spell out. Maybe making the thing more powerful the closer you get to the pre-defined symbol, kind of like making it a mini game of sorts. It could add a whole new dimention of interactivity with the standard RPG formula that isn't possible with regular controllers.

That and RPG's don't need uber graphics, you could do a really nice 2D/3D hybrid style like Dragon Warrior VII or Xenogears and use nice sprites like the ones in Desgia or Phantom Brave.

I think it could work out really really well if some company managed to do it and implament this well. A Golden Sun or dare I say Final Fantasy/Dragon Warrior affair with this interface would be drool worthy, IMO. And it'd actually make me go buy a DS, which is more than I can say for the PSP right now, sans any unknown must have RPG's coming out on it.

Oh, and for the Dinkins in all of us, here's another fun idea that'll never happen on the DS. They could make the greatest hentai games, EVER! Of course the japanese are prudish and would do the crappy censoring thing of all the good parts, killing what could have been awesome. Well, maybe the South Koreans could make something cool along those lines. ;)

And the stylus would be a giant vibrator, right?

Gee, that'd be SWEET!

I thought the same (not in detail) on how to divide the menues/text on different screens - but always consider that only one screen can display 3D geometry.

Anyway, this is how developers will most likely give use to the DS's 2 screens without really "innovating", it's just a good, practical use for the system.

Yep, I have thought about that too. They could do some really nice Tactics Ogre type games. Actually any RPG could be done really well but I happen to LOVE TO.

Also, if you are a fan of PC realtime strategy games... could be nice on the DS.

Diablo would be pretty sweet for DS. With wireless multiplayer , touchscreen and all that jazz.

I know there are several RPGs in the works, not sure how effectively they will use the touch screen, however. Some pretty cool ideas. I've been playing Baten Kaitos on Gamecube and I'm getting pretty into the card system they use for battles. However, on some battles things get moving really quick and it's hard to select the card you want in time, even using the D-pad. Being able to do this on the touch screen with the DS version that was recently announced is going to make battles even more intense.

I'm not sure how the screens work, if one runs from each chip in the system or something. But I'm pretty sure that Feel the Magic has a few situations in which some 3D geometry is present on both screens at the same time. I could be wrong, as the games style makes it difficult to tell at some points. I think it could display 3D geometry on both screens so long as each isn't to intense. Displaying 3D models of characters on 2D backgrounds, as opposed to fully 3D ones for example.

I don't know the details, but I believe that the 2 different processors (ARM7 and ARM9) have to be set to display graphics one on each screen.

The point is, only one screen can show 3D geometry according to Nintendo. Maybe the other can software emulate 3D and display very basic geometry, but I seriously don't know, I have not played Feel the Magic myself so I cannot tell.

In realtime strategy games I alwasy use the map as a shortcut to distant places, Putting the whople map in the touch screen would be sweet, to go anywhere with a click - even better than at the PC, where the map screen is always too small to use use the mouse with precision.

Or select multiple units drawing a retangle.

Not really a problem, they can just do a screen shot of the upper screen in the lower. For that "mirror" things that JH said, it's more than enough.

Don't even need to do that.

Who says the RPG has to be 3D anyway. A nice looking 2D RPG would be more than enough for me. Something like Golden Sun on DS with the features I mentioned.

That'd be sweet.

Well, since Square bought up the rights to the Ogre Saga, we haven't seen a new title. This is really shitty if you ask me. Last new game was in early 2002... Fuckers.

They got all the ex-Quest personnel directed to the FF Tactics series, from what I read.

If I'm not mistaken, the whole drawing spells idea was used in the PC game Black and White.

Didn't much care for that game or play it that much, but I'm almost positive that was in there.
