The latest entry to the handheld console market, the Nintendo DS, is enjoying global sales figures broadly in line with its predecessor, the Game Boy Advance, with over a million units sold worldwide so far.

The latest figures from Japan show that around half a million DS consoles were sold in the four days since launch, with estimates ranging from Nintendo's figure of 513,000 units sold through down to Media Create's estimate of 468,900 units.

Business newspaper the Nikkei Industrial Daily brings the two sets of figures together, explaining that around 460,000 consoles are in the hands of consumers, while a further 50,000 have been reserved but not yet collected from retailers.

In North America, over half a million units of the DS were sold in its first week at retail, so combined with the Japanese figures, the new console has already got a global installed base of over a million units.

This is in line with the 2001 launch of the Game Boy Advance, which sold around 530,000 units in its first week in the Japanese market, and 540,000 in its first week in the United States - only slightly ahead of the figures for the DS, although its shipment figures were also slightly larger.

Meanwhile, shortages of Sony's PlayStation Portable are already beginning to hit home in Japan, with the vast majority of retailers no longer able to take preorders ahead of Sunday's launch of the console.

Most retailers reportedly had queues exceeding the size of their launch allocations when they opened pre-orders, and were forced to turn customers away. Sony expects to ship only 200,000 units of the PSP at launch, with a further 300,000 expected by the end of the year.

So basically you're enthralled about the fact that the DS will have a higher initial sales figure than the PSP because Sony can't supply more PSP's than Nintendo can DS's?

Lets see how it goes, so far it seems that demand for the PSP will be higher than the DS, but Sony can't keep up.

Will those people who can't find a PSP go with a DS instead? Not a match, Struggle!

We'll find out in a few months I guess. :)

The GBA sold more in the freaking middle of the year, it wasn't even holidays that says that many people aren't warming up to the DS. I wonder what Tennis No Ouji-Sama Crystal Drive plays like...it would make me get a DS...

dunno id say DS is doing rather well. Its a major pain to actually find in stores in my area. Though its jsut the first few weeks and if you get the DS you can might as well turn in your GBA SP since it plays GBA games which is very nice. After only playing the system a little i cant wait to actually get one and "feel the magic" ROFLLOLLZZZ!!!1

Amount of commentary provided by me = 0, when I posted it

Remember I put the devil smilie on almost all my posts.

Just posting the sales figures as I get them.

I was actually just looking for DS sales figures when I ran across this. I posted the PSP bit simply to post the relevant parts of the article.

But in all honesty, Sony has hurt the SPCH-7000 by not having enough ready. PS2's are in such short supply in somew regions that people debatingf are going XBox. (XBox is hardly selling this seasonat the rare times we have PS2's in stock)

Does this follow for the PSP, or for that matter the Japanese gamer? Dunno.

There were 500k sent to the US and 500k units sent to Japan and 1 million units were sold. That's a disgustingly good record so far. Pretty much every DS produced by Nintendo has been sold. How can you knock that?

PSP will ship around 200k to Japan and they are all already sold. PSP could not outsell the DS until Sony makes more. Sales numbers just can't be compared right now. Wait till next year when both systems are out in full numbers THEN compare the sales rates.

Personally I feel both can exist together. I love the touchscreen games and I love the sexy PSP games to come.

So what do you like more? Playing Ridge Racer in a new way with a new controls.. or do you want to play RR as pretty as if it were on a home system? That's what you need to ask when choosing a system. It's not just about what's pretty or not. Thank god this hardware race is a little more interesting in that respect.

Hrm. Wasn't there supposed to be 2 million pre orders for the DS in japan? Now they're saying only 513,000 were sold? That's a little shy, don't you think?

Thank God that the handheld forum exists. The Unrelated would be 2x more flooded with all that DS and PSP discussion.

They said that the 1 million was already sold, and they would duplicate the production numbers to overcome a possible shortage.

I think the DS will continue to sell well here in Japan for a couple more days.

Already benefiting from a rather successful launch, the duel screened portable has already sold 700,000 units in the US since the system's November 21 launch, and also sold over 500,000 units in the four days following the system's December 2 launch in Japan. The new shipping totals will put 1.4 million DS systems in US retail outlets by the end of the year, surpassing the company's original goal of 1 million.
