A while ago my MVS broke down , it wont boot up and just shows garbage (usually red) on screen.

It's been sitting broken for awhile and I've finally decided to have a go at fixing it. Tonight I got a multimeter and tried testing the 5v line as I was advised to here. I connect the black multimeter prong to pin A/B on the edge connector and the red prong to C/D and the multi meter still reads 0.00. I've also tried connecting the red prong to the 12v line with the same results. I'm doing this with the MVS plugged in as my PSU shuts down otherwise.

Am I doing something wrong or is the whole thing just dead??

Make sure your multimeter is set to measure DC voltage. If you're going to measure up to 12v, I would set it at 20 -- or whatever number your meter may have above the highest voltage that you want to measure.

Generally there is a knob you turn to select the desired funtion of the multimeter. You will want the area that is generally marked with a "V=" marking (It's not an actual equal sign, but looks somewhat like it).

Thanks, I had it on the wrong setting ;)

5v reads at around 3.4, which is good I guess.

12v reads at around 55! Which I'm guessing is bad...

If it were just the 5v being low then that would seem to be my problem (I've read that a low 5v line can cause the syptoms I'm getting), however the very high 12v scares me.. a little. Do you think this would fry the motherboard or could there be hope?
