Anyone else picking up KOTOR 2 this week?

I read somewhere that this game is supposed to come out 12/6. There hasn't been a whole lotta buzz about this title and the fact that it's being released earlier than it's original date (sometime in Feb 2005, i think) has me worried.

When I pre-ordered the game about a week ago at EB games, they didn't even have the title in their computer yet. The guy working there said I was the only person who had even bothered to reserve a copy yet.

I must have played the first KOTOR about 70 times through trying all the different classes and sidequests. If this game is merely an updated expansion pack of the first game, I'll be more than happy. Who else is picking this game up?

For a game that was as good (and hyped) as the first KOTOR, you would think there would be similar excitement for the second game. I might pick it up sometime.

If it means anything to you, IGN gave it a good score.

I've had it pre-ordered since the moment it first appeared on my game shop's database.
It hasn't had the hype of, say, Halo 2, but the ad campaigns and websites dedicating weeks worth of articles to it indicate that there is some buzz.

The first one was decent, but mostly crap, so the second one has little hopes of being great. I'll give it a rent and see if it's actually playable this time around.

You're on crack dude, officially.

KOTOR was one of the best RPGs in years. A really good, compelling original Star Wars story, coupled with some excellent play mechanics, quality visuals and a great score. Hands down the best use of the Star Wars license ever. The only flaw I can really see was the occasionally chunky frame rate on the XBox, which didn't mean shit to me since I played it on my PC and it ran at 60fps in high-res looking fucking beautiful. But even those gfx issues don't affect the other quality aspects of the game.
What gives?

Is the first one really that good? I just got the box and was eyeing it... I love the concept, I love Star Wars... Is it a straight RPG (in which case my interest drops to zero), or some kind of action RPG, or some kind of hybrid game with RPG elements...? I'm just completely burned out for life on plain RPGs. I love the current Zelda games, and I enjoyed the hell out of Vagrant Story, but I've vowed not to turn on another Final Fantasy type game. As Tony Montanya would say, "I don' need tha shit in my life."

Well it was mainly the fighting interface. Having to go through menus and click the word "hit" or "shoot" to actualy perfrom an action seemed a little too much. It's almost as if they forced the idea of a menu when just assigning certian commands to buttons would have been nice. Also the control was a bit clunky.

I just remeber booting it up for the first time and not even having fun. Plus the hit anaimations and shoots are pretty weak and uninspried. It seemed like Everquest with a CPU and a good storyline with a clunky menu fighting system. I wasn't really impressed. Valkyrie Profile is a better RPG by far in terms of fun, style, and story.

Most of the issues you refer to have more to do with the limitations of the XBox pad.
The game has a much more natural interface on the PC, and again, those animations aren't chunky when the game runs at a rock solid 60fps.

Valkyrie Profile is an entirely different animal man, more of a hybrid action/RPG/platformer dealie with some seriously nice art, great soundtrack, and HORRIBLE English voices. Can't really compare the two, almost like comparing Zelda and FF.

@Southtown Kid, if you've got a solid PC, it's just as cheap as the Bawks version and a hell of a lot better. Can't really compare it to FF though...the battle system is very different, sorta real time yet menu controlled. The atmosphere, story, number of things to do and moral choices (dark side vs. light) make the game a fucking must for anyone who wants to play a groundbreaking RPG or is a Star Wars fan.

Well, I could see your point about the PC version. If I got the chance to play it on the PC, it might be nicer with a mouse and keyboard interface. The game just doesn't seem to work very well with a pad. It's just very cluny having to go manually through each menu and go over 5-6 options before you get to the button you want to press

Yes, it was a bit unfair to compare VP to KOTOR, but it was really the first awesome RPG to come to my mind.

I think Bioware is an alright company, but I'm not much into the PC kind of Baulder's Gate games. It's just territory that's been done to death (the whole D&D ideals), and Star Wars franchise has been raped to tears. I might try it out for PC and see if it plays out any better if I can find it cheap somewhere down the road.

The best way to describe it is imagine the Wizards of the Coast game in a modified turn-based (Dragon Warrior, etc.) format.

The first one is cheap to find now, so that shouldn't be a problem. If you're not sure, rent it.

While it is an RPG, you don't have to use that much strategy. I played the game a few times, and two of those were as a Solder/Warrior class Jedi. You can sail through the game with the Critical and Flurry attacks. Plus you can have an entire team of Jedi, making you pretty much unstoppable. To me, the real fun of the game comes from making the moral decisions and going from Light to Dark (if you desire to do so). So if you have sworn off of Japanese style RPGs, it still might be worth checking out.

Words of advice though, if you do play make sure you choose Force Immunity as one of your powerups. Makes fighting enemy Jedi a helluva lot easier.

Edit: This post was directed at Southtown Kid.

Christ man, i agree with Loopz. Your are smoking some goddamn bad crack.

Knights of the Old Republic is simply the finest RPG to be released from a non-japanese dev. house in a long time. Most everything about KotOR was fucking A+ solid (mostly graphics issues on the xbocks version are the only flaws i see). Granted I'm a HUGE Star Wars fan, but that did not blind me from the fact that i know a good game when i see one. And KotOR was most excellent (Bill and Ted Style).

Although I can see how you might not have like the interface but we have to remember the game was a straight up RPG and not an action rpg. I myself am not too keen on all D&D games (baldures gate, ,etc) but the d&d game rules do provide a solid, easy to use and learn system. Personally i LOVED the battle system. The ability to pause the game and issue commands was great, i felt that was pivotal towards the end of the game where you were whipping out forces powers left and right on totally badass dark jedis.

Sadly i'm poor as hell at the moment so i wont be able to pick this up for a while. I still haven't even picked up Fable, Metroid Prime 2 or MGS3.

*Edit: For real fun (and a bit of challenge) DON'T play as the soldier class. I loved being a scout with mad computer skill. Its so satisfying to hack computers and the like.

And gengi is right, the whole lightside darkside theme in the game is wonderful.

Well, all I can tell you is to read my above reasonings. It's just not a game that sucks you in when you pick the controller up. Plain and simple, the X-Box version has a poor interface with choppy animations with some lackluster effects. It's a decent game on X-Box, and it might even be better on the PC, but all in all, it's just not up to par with other games in its' class.

A fighting/menu system can kill a game. Even the most simple tasks were made tedious by having to go through almost 2-3 menus to open a dumb door. Now that is a bit ridiculous for my tastes.
