Does anyone remember how to MOD a N64?

I remember paying $500 bones for a JPN model just to have Mario 64 a few months or more before the American release back in the day. Hyped as I was at the time for the ROBOTECH game, I knew I'd need to be able to play the Domestic games as well. Anyhow, a droog back then opened up the system and removed some plastic where the cart was inserted or something. Anyone who might have done the MOD remember what tools were needed and what exactly were you taking out of the system? I know it was along the lines of the SFC/SNES cartridge lines on the cart, {or lack there of on the SFC}... though I'm not too sure how to go about it all these years later. Thinking of picking up a used N64 and I'd like to play some imports on it too, since the converter carts aren't exactly readily available anymore.

Any help is appreciated.

there's a special screwdriver set which I bought online through ebay. I'm sure you can go to radio shack and get something like it, or homedepot. You need to open it to get the piecve out. It's not like the SNES where you could burn the pieces out with a soldering iron.

You can find the procedure here at GameSX. Its the same idea as the SNES mod.

You can also mod the carts if you want.

HERESY!!! Burn the Heretic!

Don't mod the carts. Otherwise you will be fubaring them and their value. Best to mod a $20 N64 than untold number of carts.

End up with something looking like this:

Ewww, that pic broken posted makes me shudder. Seen a lot of people do DUMB shit like that.

Merc, you can use a GameShark for a cheap, easy adaptor. I can also look at my store, I may have one of the adaptors in question if you want one CHEAP.

I used the GameShark so I could play Sin & Punishment...man that game was FUCKING RAD. It will always be a crime there was no DC version of that game.

The person who did that did a horrible job, it's just plain nasty. I was just saying it was possible if he didn't have the gamebit/too lazy to take it apart. Rather easy too, just whip out the ol dremel and wack away.

Ughh, that dude totally raped that cart. Did he use a soldering iron to melt the plastic?

Definitely get yourself a gamebit Merc, my friend got one and i've used it several times. Well worth the money.

My favorite were the carts that looked like people had used them for plates at breakfast.

The Hongkong version of the N64 is regionfree and RGB enabled out of the box...don't ask me why though, but I'm happy with it.

Dude, all you have to do is either buy a Gameshark, or remove the dust cover.

Yeah, I bought some jp megadrive stuff and didn't check the carts closely till I got home, then I realised the previous owner had 'modded' the case by cutting the side bars off with a hacksaw! :(

On the subjest of N64 mods....

MERC, if you're going to do that, why not do the overclock mod at the same time?

Open it up and cut away the 2 blocks that stop you inserting jap carts. if you can't open it you can do it with a soldering iron, but chances are you will mark your flaps.

Well if you remove the whole thing, you lose the dust flaps, if you neatly cut the blocks away it does the job and its comepletely unseen.

You do know that N64's are pretty common right? :D

Thanks for all the helpful replies guys. I had no idea that the Gameshark thing also worked as a Converter cart, guess I'll just go that route instead of having to buy that tool set to open the N64, though I remember my droog Albert did that MOD like in less than 10 minutes with the exacto knife trick. Might as well head out and see if I can find one. I missed out on a lot of the later N64 titles and I'm wanting to play them now that most are dirt cheap to be had. I keep hearing about how great Perfect Dark and Sin & Punishment are that it'll be worth tracking them down.

Again thanks for the help.
