Here are some thoughts:

Day 1.

Anyone play this game? I'm currently waiting on it. This was the last "triple digit" Saturn game I wanted, and I succeeded in paying less than triple figures. I saw a BIN for 80 bucks; it took me a while to convince myself to BIN. Because let's face it, 84 bucks is not something to just throw away. But I reminded myself that this game goes for well over 100, so this was my one shot.

A very wise move on my part. ;)

I'm curious what you thought of the game; worth the dough? No? Why? etc.

Amazingly enough, the BIN auction I won, stayed up for a day and a half, without any Saturn buyers purchasing it. When I came, it had already seen 18 hits. Luckily for me, the BIN required immediate Paypal payment... so that probably saved me. If immediate payment wasn't needed, I probably would have lost out as a lot of buyers don't have paypal.

When I checked the completed auctions of Hyper Duel, I found the same seller offering the same copy for a starting bid of $99.99 and a BIN of $120. Zero bids. Therefore, he relisted it for a $79.99 BIN and luckily I was at the right place at the right time. :)

Day 2.
Just played it for half an hour. Saturn version first, then the original arcade version. I must admit at first I was just kind of going through the motions. Boy, it moves fast! I had trouble seeing in the Saturn version as the graphics resembled a bit that of TF V.

But once I hit the arcade version, despite what some may deem "primitive Genesis graphics," I was able to see a lot better, and I got farther than in the Saturn version (level 7).

It was fun. It felt like playing a good Genesis shooter. I'll have to try Saturn version again, but it's nice to know they included both versions... those are the little things that can help make a game an even better package than before.

The changing into the mech is interesting. The bomb system with the bar is interesting... it's different.

Overall first impressions: it seems very good, with both versions offering something for every gamer (same game, upped graphics). I don't know if it's worth 100 plus bucks... I think I'll prefer Battle Garegga over this, but this is definitely no slouch of a shmup. Some pretty cool bosses (both mechanical and "freaky animalistic" types represented here) and some nice color shifting levels.

Definitely a keeper. I'm glad I got this game for under 100, too. I got all the 100+ titles for under 100 :D The one 100+ title I don't have that I can think of is Stellar Assault, but I have no interest in that game whatsoever. Heard it bites, as well.

Ace deal, mate! :)
I concur -- the game isn't worth 100 bucks but then again, I believe any Saturn game is not worth $100. But you know people. Have money will do. Still, Hyper Duel's a quality port of an arcade shooter, and it is TechnoSoft's creation, and sure as hell feels like a good ole TechnoSoft shooter. I say a shmup collection is incomplete without it.

Its a classic old-school shooter and i def enjoyed it for that reason. When i 1st got it i payed about $90 after s/h. I say anything under a $100 was a good deal seeing as how it normally shoots above that mark on ebay. I unfortunately sold mine to a friend about a year ago for over a $100, so i'll have to pic it up again someday.

I still insist Panzer Dragoon Saga is worth the money! But as shooters go on the Saturn i'd say it was in my top ten, but then again i would'nt put RSG in my top ten :smirk:

v on the saturn is somehow better but there are literally HUNDREDS of much, much better shooters out there

so why should i be using my time to play TFV? :emb:

If you didn't play them at the time, I guess I can see how you may have missed their appeal. TFV is arguably the worst of the series though, TF III and IV destroy it in terms of gameplay and overall design. They were light years ahead of other console shooters at the time, save for a handful of equals like MUSHA-Aleste, Blazing Lazers and a couple others.

Different strokes for different folks.

Rayforce not bad not in the top ten.

Batsugun HELL yeah! proberbly my no one yeah.

My top ten games like Sexy Parodius, Salamader Deluxe, Thunderforce V, Cotton & the super underated Guardian Force.

Like i said RSG would'nt be in neither would games like Souky or Battle Garrega.

$84 for Hyper Duel?

Yikes...

BIG-

Yeah yikes but at that price it's actually a deal. The game almost always goes for well over a hundred bucks... so I can't argue with forking over 84 dollars as opposed to God knows what...

So you paid $84 for the port, how much did you pay for the original arcade version?

Hyper Duel for the Saturn has two game modes:

-Arcade mode. This is the original.

-Saturn mode. This is the same game but with upped graphics.

Bad game? I would say no. But as this topic has proven, different strokes for different folks. I think this game is pretty dope :D

And there are plenty of WORSE games out there that command such a high dollar it's not even funny. I would not consider Hyper Duel one of those games. It's some good arcade shmup shit... and instead of giving us a bare bones port they even included a Special Saturn version.

Game companies take note!
