I have been thinking about this for a while and once I saw the game art thread I was reminded about it.

So, lets start seeing some folks thoughts on games that lost that special "feeling" once ported to other and perhaps more powerful hardware.

The original version of Need for Speed. This game was fabolous on the 3DO but once it was ported to the Saturn and the PSX it didn't seem to be nearly as fun. This came out in late 94 or early 95 and I picked it up as soon as it was available. I bought my 3DO in the fall of 94 after it dropped in price to an "affordable" $400. My college roommate and I played this fucker for hours on end trying to get the best track times. Of course then in March 95 a friend brought over both an import PSX with Ridge Racer and a imported Saturn and a host of other games and the 3DO starting showing its lacking horsepower.

But, for whatever reason, the PSX and Saturn versions of The Need for Speed that later followed never seemed to be quite as fun as the original 3DO version.

I'm going to have to say any Atari game that used trackballs or spinners, like Tempest, Missle Command, Centipede and Millipede. Once you try the original control layouts and then go to the versions in Atari Anthology or Atari 80 Games In One, you'll understand.

I totally agree with you on Need for Speed. That game is never the same (although High Stakes was pretty good, but still not the same).

Crash Bandicoot and Mario, I only really liked Super Mario Bros 1 and 3.

In no specific order:

1) The Sonic the Hedgehog platform games (can't really comment on games like Mean Bean Machine, etc.) The Genesis games felt right, the Sega CD and NGPC came close, the Game Gear and SMS versions were all wrong and the Dreamcast games were average. I have not played Sonic Heroes.

2) As Kobylka68 said, SNK ports pre-Dreamcast.

3) Road Rash. Was never the same once it became digitized.

4) Pac-Man for the Atari 2600. This port was almost an entirely different game. Actually, this can be said for a lot of 2600 games.

5) The remade Final Fantasy games for the PS1/PSOne, thanks to their excessive load times.

Come to think of it, there are few good ports. Most have something or everything wrong. Maybe I'm being too negative, as always.

edit: Oops! I forgot to add the original release of SSVS on the AES. :kekeke:

Chrono Trigger on the PS1, lovely anime scenes, but as with the FF games to much loading killed it :(

Try playing games like Defender with those @#$%&! console controllers :blow_top:

720 and almost any trackball and spin-knob game makes a poor transition to the home systems.

Not to sound like a Neo Geo prick, but many of the Neo games I think feel much different then they do on other platforms. Even the "good" ports on DC were just... wrong. Granted, I haven't played MS3 on Xbox, but that's a good example.

Another one that I was disgusted by right at the get go was Final Fantasy. Where ever they were ported, they faultered. Good old SNES on PSX? Crap. Loading? Come on.... Also, the PC version of FF7 was pretty poor, IMHO. I stomached it for about 20 hours and then when I got to one area, the game froze. 20 hours for nothing, but no biggie.

Some games, however, get better. GCN Resident Evil? WOW! Wooooooow. Much much better. I disagree with Road Rash. The 3DO and later, PSX/Saturn games were so badass.

The 3do game had the actual dash boards of the cars when you drove in first person view. Which was very cool. For some reason no other racing game has really done that since. And that homo in the fmvs was the shit LOL :smirk:

Yeah, I think that fucker was named Racer X or some bullshit. He use to talk mad shit about how his grandma could outrun ya and stuff. I never understood while they removed him. He was particurally insulting after you would fuck up and lose a race and their he was to remind ya.

i'd say any of the dreamcast games except for sonic 2 and shen mue
that made the exodus to gc or ps2.

Archon. The C=64 version was far and away the best and most responsive version out of all of them. The very accurate gameplay mechanics and speed have yet to be recreated in any other version.
