I knew you were going to post something in response to me. I knew it for a goddamn fact.

These graphics aren't going to be possible real-time, not for a LONG time. Game companies and manufacturers need to learn to stop promising things years in advance. Nothing ever lives up to the expectations these mongrels jam into people's brains.

I'd rather see the Vic Viper look real than some monkey-faced football player anyway.

Maybe they won't be possible at start, but eventually, with optimization and months/years of experience, some developers might deliver that kind of graphics (in the next console generation).

And I really don't care about the football picture, I am not really into footbal games or know which look better/worse, I am mainly referring to the first picture - which seriously looks like what a next generation launch title should look like.

I would guess that they will have GC like that from the start in the next gen, but I don't think that there will be in came gfx like that in the next gen...

As usual, The Magic Box delivers uncomplete information.

Here is the official information.

Anyway, considering that current PCs can deliver graphics like this -

You people seriously believe that by 2006 we shouldn't expect consoles to deliver graphic quality like the one EA is showing?

I believe it is possible considering that the next gen of consoles will be completely compatible with 720p and 1080i resolutions on tv. The graphics will look ridiculously real.

Very good, impressive - yes. Ridiculously real? I seriously doubt that. It's not like the next generation systems will be able to render Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within in real-time... I believe.

The images look great, and honestly, looking at some of the real-time cut-scenes from Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater, I don't doubt for a second that it will possible to do that in a few years, but look back in all your old EGMs and NextGens at the blurbs about Project Reality and Project DURAL and all the amazing feats these things were going to do. They always hype it up to insane degrees, then the things come out, and the reality is a little less than promised.

I one time read an interview with Ken Kutaragi where the interviewer asked him when video games will be able to do graphics so realistic that you couldn't tell the difference between reality and the game.

He responded that the system would have to be approximately 1,000 times more powerful than the hardware inside a PS2.

We have a while, folks.

(On the other hand, a new television was recently tested in Japan where the resolution and picture quality was so incredibly realistic that people watching it vomited due to disorientation... pretty nuts)

Even if they are able to produce those kinds of graphics in real time (which I sort of doubt), it really won't be all that exciting IMO. Graphics have surpassed gameplay a long time ago, and the weak link in the chain of gaming has been gameplay mechanics for quite some time. Aside from all the nostalgic stuff, that's why I still play the Neo so much, and that's why SFIII is still seen by many as the best fighter out there. The gameplay just hasn't even really come close to allowing the gamer to move effortless in a 3-D environment, and attain the same tight feel that 2-D games have. Maybe it's not possible, I'm not sure, but I definitely think that's what they should be putting their effort into. For quite awhile now, gameplay innovations have been few and far between - and glitz and glam have reigned supreme.

/end of rant

If you look at the graphics that PCs are capable of delivering now:*, graphics like that shouldn't be that far away.

(* ATI's newest tech demos, ATI's and Crytek's The Project demo, 3DMark05 and some newest games)

That's all I've been missing from my viewing experience. Sit back with a beer, watch a game and puke a few times.

Crazy Japanese. :mr_t:

the current generation systems' graphics are far better than my expectation during the PS1 era. the only thing missing is the realistic physics (real time car damages, ... etc.) they promised us.

still, we have got some nice graphic effects like hair movements, better light effects, and some games had awesome car damages (Burn Out, GTA3). at least, they've shown big improvements.

I'm always interested in new technologies, but after the "Emotion Engine" and the "Realistic Zelda GC Demo" I have a wait-and-see approach.

Wqait a few years, i'm sure it's perfectly possible.

That isn't the issue however.

I believe games are going to take too long to develop to fully utilise modern technologies = less games.

This is possible my friend. I've seen it with my own two eye balls while working at EA Tiburon. Madden 2007 will look like that.

Same here, I never understood why games like Scud Race or Lost World never got ported.

And here is the worst part, Scud Race was actually being ported.
