A few things to consider:
- I don't care what kind of spray paint you get, you should definitely sand and prime the surface.
- Sand with a fine grit sandpaper or steel wool
- wipe the surface down with a slightly damp cloth and LET IT DRY!
- paint in sweeping motions going clear past the edge of the cover! Or else you will get paint build up on the edges and that will suck
- apply many coats. Don't try to be perfect the first pass. Cover what you can each time and fill in as you do the subsequent coats
- the last coat should be completely evenly applied
- when drying between coats (at least 30 min between), make sure you leave it somewhere where there is minimal dust. I made a box to cover the top, but is open on the sides to allow the fumes to dissipate
-IF YOU SCREW UP, finish the coat and let it dry a day. Then sand down the area to a level surface and wipe clean.
Or powdercoat it!
Incidently , I've been looking into chroming a couple covers, but there ain't many shops that do true chrome plating these days. Chroming is not a paint job but an electrochemical process that applies chromium to the steel surface by applying a charge across the metal while sitting in a solution containing the Cr. The process is complicated by the fact that Cr can be highly carcinogenic in that form before plating.
But it looks fuckin' cool.
