#1 Lone Wolf and Cub series

Dead or Alive 1,2,3 "will toilet snake your soul"

Other Takashi Miike (above) films like Ichi The Killer, Audition, Visitor Q "The love between a mother and son, is never fully realized untill.."

My advice stay away from much hyped recent movies like Princess Blade and Versus.
Other recommendations:
Evil Dead Trap ( I think thats the title ) is very good.

If you havent seen The Lone Wolf and Cub series, I highly recommend it. I'm pretty sure these are all on DVD now.

Battles Without Honor & Humanity {Jingi Naki Tatakai}
#1 is the best {the one featured in the link}
it's an 8 part serial.

Modern Yakuza: Outlaw Killer {Gendai Yakuza}
#6, and the last of the series
but you don't need to understand
the others. It's stand alone. I'm
going to have the whole series someday.

The Red Spectacles
1984 meets Alphaville w. Anime type sight gags.
Somewhat violent. It's sequel/prequel made a bit
more linear sense. A derranged movie about how
TIME is both friend and enemy to man, and how
we all at some point return to a familiar place.

Stray Dog: Kerberos Panzer Cops
Sequel that's events take place before TRS ^
*A story of a man searching for himself and answers
to his past... slow moving but beautiful if you actually
watch it for what it is. The ending is bullet alley against
Mime painted "Communist" like government officials
trying to wipe out any individuality in an era of terror
coming that is seen in TRS.

AVALON
*It isn't a beautiful as Casshern, but it's
trippy none the less, and a bit more action
packed than Stray Dog. {yes another Oshii film}

Bad Girl Boss
See the synosis in the link.

Tears of The Black Tiger
Odd Thailand Western... a "Western" in Thailand!

Violent Fire

Dead or Alive
Classic Takashi Miike the one that kickstarted
his outlandish career, and the best of the 3 part series.

Graveyard of Honor {Jingi No Hakaba}
Kinji Fukusaku's 1975 Fuck You Yakuza film
to end all Yakuza film.

...AND THAT'S MY LIST FOR NOW.

Oldboy
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance
A Tale of Two Sisters
Silmido
Kairo (Pulse)
Taegukgi: Brotherhood of War

Ranked in order of preference. All of these movies are, at most, three years old (that's Kairo; the rest are two years or less).

All are very good.

Holy shit, some nice recommendations. Were you the one on this site that linked to www.unearthedfilms.com some time ago? Ever since I first went there I have become unable to resist the movies they're making/distributing. I saw the trailer for Electric Dragon 80000V and I thought it'd be simply amazing. Is it available on NTSC NA DVD? The site says release for 2005. I want to see the entire thing sooo badly. Just the other week I picked up The Flower of Flesh and Blood and Mermaid In A Manhole/ He Never Dies but from DiabolikDVD. Turned out they were cheaper than UnearthedFilms. :buttrock:

There is also Aoi Haru (Blue Spring). I thought that was a pretty cool movie.

i won't repeat what other people have already recomended:

Ong Bak - makes Van Damme's kickboxer movie look like a Disney flick. supposed to be released this february in US theatres

Volcano High - not the butchered MTV version. it feels like live action anime.

Samurai Fiction - more of a rental. kind of a lighthearted film homage to old samurai movies. The main baddie is Tomoyasu Hotei (his music was featured in Kill Bill trailers, called Battle Without Honor or Humanity). his character in this movie makes a brief cameo in Red Shadow since it had the same director.

The Eye - the last 30 minutes is kinda lame, but has some really scary shit before that. like an Asian twist of Sixth Sense/The Others.

Zu Mountain/Zu Warriors - Tsui Hark movies. don't know the exact titles but one is from the 80's and the other is like his own remake/sequel of sorts. the remake/sequel was supposed to be released here as Zu Warriors but the one i watched was titled Legend of Zu.

City Hunter - jackie Chan live action version of the anime. this is the one that has the live action Street Fighter characters, Jackie plays both E Honda and Chun Li.

for those in the San Diego area the best place to get/rent all these movies recommended here is at Sing Young Music World in Kearny Villa/Clairemont area by Yaohan/Mitsuwa

I've been pushing this movie on people for a long time now, finally a US release - in probably three cities!

Sequel is in the works :)

And how come no one has mentioned God of Cookery yet? Man, ya weirdos.
