I've seriously been waiting to play this goddamn game all day, and now that I finally have everything else straightened out, I have to update?

145 minutes and CLIMBING.

This is ridiculous, no wonder EB told me they wouldn't accept them as trade-ins, this is a fucking farce.

They released a Half-Life 2 Deathmatch mod today, and it completely has Steam strangled. It's a pain in the ass at first, but well worth it. You could get on Halo 2 you know.

The whole system is retarded. I shouldn't be FORCED to update anything if I don't want to, I can't even enjoy their product because their jamming this bullshit down my throat.

I fully agree with you that Steam sucks.

What if you want to play your game on a laptop where you don't have internet? What if your a 56k user and don't want to DL huge updates or take up the phone line while playing single player? Having to be online 100% of the time and downlaod all updates is garbage. It took me a hour to install Half Life 2 only to find out that my 4th disk was defective at the end of the installation so I had to get another copy of the game and re-install it. H 2 is amazing though, I am completely in love. It blows Halo 2 out of the water in all aspects. I don't feel like getting into the reasons why right now but if you play both games it is completely obvious.

It's the first of its kind, and I understand everyone's frustration with it, but from Valve's POV I get it. Fuck all the retailers, if I scratched and sweated over a game that long, I'd wanna be able to sell it direct to people too.

I dunno what the deal is, but they need to add some massive servers to their pipeline and shorten these load times. Everyone and their mother hates Steam precisely for shit like this.

You can thank pirates and rommies for the Steam system. Thanks to their activities over the years, PC users are now forced to use this convoluted system.
Good luck!

Sadly, Steam can't stop pirates either; it just makes it harder for them. There are ways to play HL2 offline by tweaking Steam and downloading a "No CD" crack. There will always be ways around the law as far as PC games go. We are suffering through Steam for no reason.

That's sad when some pirate protection comes out. It seems to punish the honest people who buy it more than the pirates. Mainly because, as you said, the pirates will find a way around the system.

I'm pretty sure they already have. For HL2 that is.

Whoa, wait, you HAVE to have a connection to the internet to play HL2 AT ALL?! That is just fucking ridicolous!!!! Even if I'm just firing up to play single player, I have to be connected to Steam? So gay :oh_no:

whats gay is the game cost 55 fucking dollars. limited edition is 80 fucking dollars. prices like that make people download free hacks which in turn forces shit like steam upon us.

such a viscous cycle... :oh_no:

Pirates have cracked it. But it took them like five or six releases to do so. I was looking on some newsgroups today, and the whole thing was just a big mess of warez kiddies crying about hl2 and how it wouldnt work right.
Steam is really retarded. Sure it works great once you have everything updated and "unlocked". But as soon as a patch comes out you can forget about playing anything steam related for about a day or two.
I just dont see why we the paying customer should have to deal with this BS. At least give us the option to use it or not. And whats worse is that you cant sell the damn thing after your done with it. Because once you register the game then thats it. Noone else can play it unless they have a seperate steam acount.

Yea, pretty lame isn't it? If you get the game and want to play offline just search the internet on the issue and you will find various ways to get around Steam and Play Half Life 2 offline. We shouldn't be having to go through any of this...Don't let Steam steer you away from the game though, HL2 is incredible and it would be a shame if you missed out on it.

Unless you got the game at Fry's the Day after thanksgiving...$37 for the regular version. :glee:

I am still regretting not buying Call of Duty for $9.99 at Best Buy when I had my chance. I didn't think I would like it but later that night I played it at my buddies house and I loved it. Unfortunately it was too late to go back and get it for that price. :crying:

So I managed to get the game TO WORK.

Graphically its the most impressive thing I've ever seen.

The load times however are ATROCIOUS, I don't remember having to wait this long since the game "Sin". And it occurs nearly every 12-15 minutes, really sad.

And now the game is crashing for no reason. Sadly, Valve's forums seem to be littered with tons of help topics, including the crash I'm experiencing. Halo 2 may have shitty draw-in and no ending, but at least the fucking thing doesn't crash. This game is certainly a test of my patience, if it weren't so good I'd probably be in bed.

STEAM was a fucking nightmare, but mostly because I bought it the day it came out, so the servers were slow as Hell, and I wanted to play it NOW, not in 5 hours.

It never crashed on me once I got it up and running, though.

When all was said and done, and the STEAM frustration was over... well, it was still the best game experience I've had in 10 years, and the last few stages are just about the best ever.

Stick with it, it's worth it.

Well, I downloaded a dvd iso of it in Spanish that works without Steam and without internet connection. I've hardly played it but appearently it works perfect.

Word. Like I always say, its the crooks and assholes of the world that breed new laws and reduce our freedom. Valve is pioneering this system (steam).

What are your specs? It has never crashed on me and the load times are not too bad. The load times may have to do with your HD if it runs at a slower RPM.

My setup:
Pentium 4 2.8ghz w/HT
1 Gig Kingston Ram
Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb
120 Gig Maxtor 7200 RPM HD
